How can they cancel out our government without asking? Or have I just misunderstood again?

There is a clause in the treaty that says an attack on one of it's members can be a considered an attack on all of it's members and that those members must come to the aid of the one being attacked, or something like that. However, it doesn't just kick in. The country under attack must call for help, which apparently we just did. I sure this will be in the form of economic sancitions against any country that is harboring the terrorists. We will take care of any military action ourselves. Unless of course they decide to help! In which case I'm sure we'll accept it!

Being at work, you guys are the only source of new info. for me.
This sounds like NATO will aid the US in any decision made.
Of course, we will not make a decision without finding some tangible evidence.

Thank you for clearing that up, Sir Taliesin. I thought that it meant that the US could now command our armies - good thing that I misunderstood! Whew!

Article 5 of the NATO Charter...basically it's reason for existence. NATO Secretary-General has drafted a resolution to invoke the Article for the first time in NATO history. The Article basically says, "If you attack one of us, then you attack all of us.". So...basically...as far as Article 5 is concerned...all members of NATO were attacked by terrorists yesterday.

Maybe some countries wouldn't have joined NATO if they thought this clause would ever be invoked, hmmm?

WHAT has this NOT got to do with NATO? Crap like this is exactly why NATO was formed.
