Hi there! I'm at Chapter 6, my main character fighter goes on with halberds and 2-handed swords and Minsc is specialized in mace, katana. Now, I have to decide for Minsc to choose a new proficiency. I'm thinking about Long swords, flails, axes and BASTARD swords! But still, I havent found a REALLY good longsword yet. The best longsword I found is Daystar. Equilizer is mediocre. I'm about to advance to ToB. And if you found very good bastard swords at beginning of the TOB and still there isnt any good longswords in TOB I like to go with bastard swords. Your advice?

The best Longsword you can get in SoA is definately the Blackrazor, but you will get it at the end of SoA. In ToB you can get the Answerer and Angurvadal. Both incredible weapons!!!

Hmmm non-paladins should do long sword for ToB... maybe warhammer? unless someone else is using Crom Fayer.

Wait until you get to ToB...
Here is my fav:

the Answerer longsword+4. On every hit, the opponent must loose 15% Magical Resistance, loose 2 points of AC! Great against boss battles! It's down factor is that it's only a plus 4 and is very SLOW!

For Minsc or a fighter in SOA, axes is a good prof. There are two good +3 axes with extra fire, acid, and cold damage that you can get pretty early in the game. Does great when you dual weild!

Avatar is right on the money here, prob. the best wepon (from an offesive stance) in the game(s) - it virtually obviates the need for a mage.

Blackrazor would be an incredible wepon (defensivly for the regeneration), but regeneration never seemed to work for me (bummer).

Certainly Celestial fury is great, so is Crom F. but you have to wait a while to pick up those. You can always ditch the axes when you come across something better. The axe prof. will serve you well all the way through TOB because of Azure edge. THE choice in ranged vampire slaying.

There are several good two-handed swords. I always have Minsc with this proficiency AND long-sword, so that I get the best of both. I rarely use bastard swords, and I leave hammers, maces, flails to clerics.

Blackrazor is a very good sword in SoA, and in ToB (as has been said) the Answerer +4 is great, as is Angruval. However, my personal favorite weapon in ToB is an axe... Axe of the Unyielding +5. I can't remember the exact bonuses it gives, but I remember they are VERY NICE.
