Really, I tried to role-play a Bard this time! All her inventory is cluttered up with instruments - she's also my Forge specialist, and I had her play them several times in combat. The first time, her Music skill was around lvl 7; she had more turns a round than the others who were casting spells, so I thought, this is great, let her play some more. (A pity, BTW, that you don't get any sound....) But suddenly all her efforts fizzled, and when I looked at her status, it said 'tired', and a bit later 'winded'; she stayed winded for all of 15 minutes. She still tired easily at skill lvl 11; she's an elf and has a fortitude of 18, so it can be that.
I've had three chars so far doing 15 lvls of Bard, one had a fortitude of 23 and still got tired and winded. So I think Barding is not for me .....

a higher athletics skill perhaps?
The iron lung trait is a plus too, but I forget which item gives it to you.
Someone who remembers will be along soon I am sure.
I'll do a search and see if I can find it.

Moni

It is The Ring of Neptune...I forget where I found it but I know it was when I was in Brimloch Roon...probably in the Sunken City or beyond.

Traute,
Was trying to roleplay bard during my first playthrough . May be I am a bad bard at all but I can't say anything good about W&W's bards. Not great spellcaster, not great fighter, and all those instruments give only simpliest spells (well, may be not simpliest but definately not those that I would have! ). Hope somebody who likes bards will be around soon and tell us more about the subject - what if we just do not understand something important about bard's role?
Moni,
yes, it's Ring of Neptune and it can be found in Collasium, you are absolutely correct

Sincerely Yours,
Tanda

I like the idea of a bard, but it wasn't handled very well in Wizards & Warriors. In Wizardry, the bard was quite possibly one of the most important and powerful characters in the game, especially when first starting out. A newly-created bard came automatically with a "Sleep" lute which was like having a never-ending supply of sleep spells. There's the "Lute of Tranquility" in W&W, but it's not really that big of a deal because by the time you get it and can use it, there's not much you really want to put to sleep that you can't whack at or spellcast at faster. In Wizardry, where you may have 4 groups of 8 monsters each (quite likely!), that endless "Sleep" lute could save your butt! It did me numerous times. Not to mention that in Wizardry, the bard had full Wizard's spells, which were all the offensive Fire, Ice, Earth, Wind, and Divine spells (Magic Missile, Fireball, and Nuclear Blast, just to name a few). It wasn't just the paltry Moon spells you have in Wizards & Warriors. Add to that the ability to pick locks and pick pockets, and you have a very versatile asset to a party.

If only W&W had followed through with the Bard! I still get the bard because I've always liked that role, and it's a quick way to get Moon & Fiend magic without being a Warlock (or having to wait for Assassin).

Sorry Saz but I don't think that Bards can get Fiend on their own (unless of course you're refering to musical instruments).

Personnaly, I used the Bard as a stepping stone to boost my moon before becoming a Monk then a Ninja.

Oh, yeah they can. (get Fiend, I mean). It takes them longer, but they can start learning Fiendcraft as well as Mooncraft. The "Tome of Misinformation" is wrong on that count.

A role I wish they WOULD have had from the get-go would have been Druid. A role that would let you learn Stone and Vine magic (I mean, those are PERFECT for a druid, and there's too few roles that do Stone magic). It would also be more appropriate for the "Nature's Keeper" trait rather than Monk.

I would have much preferred seeing a "Druid" role than the Monk role. Don't know what that role would have done for its ascension quest, though!

Well, that will teach me to challenge a Master.

I didn't use the Tome of Misinformation, I just looked at the game booklet:

Bard... "Additionaly, the Bard is also able to learn Moon magic spells..." (p.29).

So, how do you do it?

Heheh, I call that the "Scroll of Misinformation!"

As soon as you become a Bard, you have Fiendcraft ability. Both Moon and Fiend light up on your Spells interface, and I think you get "Enfeeble" as your starting spell. You have to go to 2nd level Fiendcraft, though, to get 1st level spells, so you can only learn Fiendcraft at 1/2 skill level. Still, it's worthwhile to get that "Pain" spell fairly soon on. You have to have level 4 Fiendcraft skill to get it, though.

I use the bard, too, but for a slightly different reason. That is the only place to get Trickery, and you can get Iron Lung long before you need it. The Ring of Neptune gives you Iron Lung AT THE END of the Sunken City when you don't need it anymore.

I too liked the Bard in Wizardy 7 and would have hoped for a better set of spells and a better music system. After the first game I gave up on music equipment and don't even both to train the skill.

As for the Fiend Magic, I do not remember if it was my Bard or my Ninja that got the Fiend Magic. I do remember that I had to be level 4 in Fiend to be able to learn a level 2 Fiend spell.
