Actually, historically NATO was formed for reasons like the following:

- to deter the Soviets from attacking Western Europe
- to secure the US influence over Western Europe
- to secure a longstanding US military presence in "Central Europe"(e.g. Germany) as a reassurance for Germany's neighbours that they would never have to face a German military agression again (and who could blame them for wanting that kind of reassurance considering the European history of the 20th century).

So, NATO during the first four decades of its existence from a political point of view was basically a tradeoff of some of the national sovereignty of its European members for American protection against the Soviet Union and against a possible resurgence of militarism in Germany (for all members but Western Germany itself, for which the incentive was a faster readmittance into the ranks of respected nations). For the USA it was a tradeoff of the expenditure for its military presence in Europe and the nuisance of having to at least listen to the concerns of its allies before acting for a convenient way of maintaining its sphere of influence in Europe which it had gained control of as a result of WW II.

Ramon I never said that the primary reason wasnt to deter Soviet aggression, BUT PART of the NATO pact was that the member nations would assist in the defense and come to the aid of each other in any international crisis. Others here have posted the appropriate articles.
