small abstract about multiclassing

well i saw here and on other forums many parties using multi class characters
here are my eurocents for it

2nd edition rules
lets start with my beloved fighter/thief [img]smile.gif[/img]
it play him at least as thief but this combination allows me
1st using a str bonus on all attacks
2nd raising his hp
3rd allow him wearing more items (e.g) longswords ....

3rd edition rulez
on a thief
1st he gets a str bonus
2nd he gets a constition bonus
3rd he can wear all armor/weapons
4th he gets a damage bonus on his backstabs 1d6 for two levels (*slurps them*)

all this makes me think that the single class rogue becomes far more powerful in the art of thieving

well now we have the icewind dales rules
in 3rd edition a max barbarian/4 level fighter combination is a powerful combatist (maybe unchallengable in close combats)
he get all the fighter related feats (more of them) can specilize in weapons
and don't get real penalty

but in the icewinddale word the do something bad
the stats of the two races arn't not addable meaning u loose the Bab for u 4 fighter levels and also the damage bonus !!
this is a hard drop behind
i tested it: from 10 battles (12-4 against 16-0) the pure barbarian won 9 !!!
so i think the only useable way for mutliclassing is the single foreign class level to reach a special goal: e.g.
the rogue with a ranger level for dual wielding
or
the fighter with a paladin level for the holy avenger ....
