Rangers also can much easier get higher rolls on stats. An elfish ranger can easily get above 90 in less than 10 rolls.

btw, you are forgetting that ranger with a shield is also a good combination.

My current party(yes, everyone) are using bows and melee weapons if an enemy makes through.
Very good tactic, the one with bows. I can kill one Yan-Ti elite in one round(or even with one attack(from each member of course)) before it even reaches my party.
Just killed few hours ago Yxynomei without losing any hitpoints. Just made few summons and fired with paladin and fighter/mage(throwing axe+2 because i didn't have any +2 bolts) while others fired at priests and archers. Took two minits to finish her. Unfortunaly i lost her heartstone gem somewhere in junkpile and had to bring it from another game.

What I was saying was that everyone do not need shields to survive(my party for example).
Only two/one members of my party carry shield (slinngers) and other are without.
