Wel, to each his own. Personally, I always enjoyed Baldurs Gate 1 a bit more, because you have considerably more freedom. Baldurs Gate 2, however, is a truly massive game and also consider to be one of the best RPG's ever. Personally, I'd recomend you to buy Baldurs Gate 1 first, as 2 is a direct sequel of the first part. When playing Baldurs Gate 2, you'll even be able to import your character from the original. Also, I'm very envious. Never having played Baldurs Gate before.. you're in for a treat.

I started with BG2, which took me a little while to get into, but then quickly became one of the greatest games I've ever played. Thirsty for more, I hunted down as many Infinity Engine games from Bioware as I could (Icewind Dale, BG1+ToTSC, Planescape Torment etc) but sadly (with the possible exception of PS:T) none could hold a candle to BG2 (I'd clearly been spoiled by it!). I'd therefore recommend running through BG1 first to familiarise yourself with the interface and game rules before going through BG2, otherwise BG1 feels slightly disappointing to play afterwards!

I, like Dreamer, preferred BG1 for it's freedom and creativity. BG2 is worth more than a pop or two itself though, so you should try it too.

They're going cheap these days anyway, you'd be just as well to get both and play through the whole series, that way you can feel free to play with mods later on etc.

I look at them as one long game, although as mention there are different empahsises on certain game play elements in each game, however there is more the same than different. So i'd play 1 then go on to 2

Both are pretty darned good! I've gone through BG2 already but am only about halfway or less through BG1 and I'd vote them both worthy of playing, although I obviously had more exposure to BG2, thus lean a bit toward it at this point.

BG1 will always have a special place in my heart. It was my first CRPG. Prior to that, I'd been playing Doom, Quake, and Diablo, LOD. They can't hold a candle to the BG series though, and, as has been recommended, I'd get both, and start at the beginning, and go. I envy you the discoveries you are about to make. I wish I could play them all with no foreknowledge of what was going to happen.

I prefer BG2 for replayability, but you should play both, in order, using the same character, for the best overall storyline. IMO.
