Yep, had to read it in school (9th or 10th grade, I think).
You do realize, of course, that the novel has been used by more than one homocidal maniac (Mark David Chapman, the slayer of John Lennon, and John Hinckley, attempted assassin of then-president Reagan included) for justification for their crimes? I've always found that fascinating. |

Great book, isn't it?
I would highly recommend Somerset Maughams' "The Razors Edge". I think you would probably enjoy it also. |

I need to read that myself. When I moved from the regular to honors english program, I missed it. The honors folks had read it the year before and the regular folks were to read it the next year.

Hiya,
I loved that book, one of my favorites. I know that poor Holden is quite a loser when you really think about it, but I feel that there is a little Holden Caufield in all of us. I liked that the story was true to life, the way he decribed things (ie the steaks at lunch looked like cow pies), it just reminded me of people that I knew grewing up who saw life as it is, not in some fabrication. Back into the shadows.... Scronan P.S. Saz, how are you? |

Read it about 8 yrs ago. Guess I was a bit old for it - but I enjoyed it anyway! Great book. Salinger was a pretty odd guy, though...! Didn't want fame, lol!

Wow, a Catcher in the Rye thread!! I'm so happy.
Hands down, that's the best book I've ever read. It's funny and sad and smart all at the same time. I really identify with Holden, and think a lot like him. I'm not getting on anyone, but how is Holden a loser? Adults always tell me that when I bring up that this is my favorite book. "Oh, it's a really good book, but Holden is such a loser." How so? He just thinks differently. Maybe I'm just defensive since I relate with him so much, I don't know. I really suggest that anyone who hasn't read it should go out and get it as soon as possible. |
