...assuming you believe there is such a thing as a great comic strip, and assuming this subject hasn't been done to death, before.

My own favorite would be Krazy Kat. If you haven't ever seen it, look for collections in places like Amazon.com. It ran from 1919-1945, I think, and is one helluva of zany strip that mixes knockabout humor, wild, erudite language, surrealism and philosophy. It had an enormous influence on another strip I really liked, Bloom County. (In fact, Breathed deliberately paid hommage several times to Krazy Kat by using the format of a continuous conversation held over ever-changing, wierd backgrounds, with the protagonists floating in midair, diving, standing, etc.)

And yours...?

Herman Hedning!
The greatest comic ever written, it's swedish though, so I don't think any of you have seen it..
I can't really think of an international comic strip that I like..

I'm a fan of foxtrot myself. I like the references to Star wars and LOTR they have... It makes me laugh

Sure: post away! That goes for Herman Hedning too, @Axil, if you can point to a webpage or translate anything.

Here's a pretty good link to a page that has some Krazy Kat materials on it: http://www.krazy.com/toc.htm

...and here's another one, with less introductory and written stuff, but more of the comic strips: http://www.gographics.com/funnies/kkindex.htm

This page is more erudite, a full-blown essay, but with some of the more elaborate, wonderfully fantastical Krazy Kat strips that Herrmann liked to do up on the weekends. Because of their original size, the reductions are a bit hard to read, but definitely worth it.
