I have a Dell 2650 Inspirion (which has been replaced by I believe the 1100), and it runs everything I need for work, including all Office apps, as smooth as silk. It's a P4 1.8 with 256MG Ram and a 30 Gig HD. I also do some limited gaming on it, so you may want to make sure you get a decent video card (that's my only drawback).

I have a rather powerful Toshiba, but I regret not checking the battery life. It's a little under two hours. Toshiba does make rather good laptops, though, even if they're on the expensive side.

The Inspiron 1100 is a good deal, it gives you all that most people need for only $750, and if you order it through Dell.com, you can pick and choose your parts so that you can upgrade the memory, hard drive, OS, and maybe even processor if you so desire.

I have a Toshiba laptop and since I got it (Christmas) it hasn't given me any problems. It runs really smoothly and is even good for games. I don't have the specifics now, since I am at university, but I can check if you want.
