ENGLAND LAST WON THE ASHES???

It was 1986

In Australia :

At Talaq had just won the Melbourne Cup
Crocodile Dundee was smashing box office records
The Bangles were top of the hit parade with "Walk like an Egyptian"
Greg Norman (today's yesterday man) had just won his first Major Championship
Bread and milk cost half what they do today
Current test squad member Nathan Hauritz (and imminent university graduate Aelia Jusa) were in grade 1
Davros was many inches thinner, with the first hints of a moustache ..... AND had a girlfriend

The other momentous events of 1986 :

Chernobyl Disaster
The Reykjavik summit between Ronny and Gorby makes significant progress on nuclear disarmament
President Marcos flees the Phillipines in disgrace
The space shuttle exploded
The Iran Contra deal comes to light.

oh, and did I mention -

Davros had a girl friend

Also :

Morocco confirmed their status as an emerging football power.

They topped their preliminary group in the World Cup (with England, Portugal and Poland) and qualified for the second round in Mexico.

It was the first time that an African team had achieved this feat.

Argentina went on to win the world cup, after the famous "hand of god" goal eliminated England in the quarter finals.

oh thank you for telling me that Davros, although of course the most important event of 1986 was my own birth (not in Australia though, *phew*)

It sure does seem like a long time since the Poms were half-decent. I think this year's Ashes could get very messy indeed. Can't wait to see what Hayden and Gilchrist do to them!
