Anyone can become an assassin. In my first game, that's how my wizard finally achieved another class. I picked his stats so poorly that he would have been level 40 before he could have become anything else.

All you have to do is walk into the thieves' guild with the dagger in hand, and you're invited. And if you're playing unpatched, you can get sneaky and hand off the dagger to someone else before the guildmaster finishes talking, and not only are you an assassin, but you've still got the dagger. So someone else can become an assassin, and so on, and so on....

Same with the other special roles. There are no class restrictions for who is eligible.

Cool, thanks.

I thought I'd read something in a thread that only certain
classes could change to assassin.

Thank you.

Nope, any class can ascend to assassin. However, only the rogue class can 'equip' the assassins dagger.

As "B" pointed out, this is where I do a little (Willow, close your eyes) game induced gamming. I always seem to be unpatched, and have a spare critter with me at the guild once I have earned the dagger.

A small clarification: You don't need the dagger "in hand" (only a thief class can have the dagger in hand). It suffices that the dagger is in the active character's inventory. Therefore, any class can become an assassin, even a mage.
Of course, once you become an assassin, you become a thief class and the dagger can occur in your hand

Quite correct, Radek. I did not mean to imply that you must equip the dagger to become an assassin. Simply having it in your inventory is enough, just like the four tomes for the zenmaster.

I made an assassin, kept the dagger, and when I'd enter the thieve's guild, my assassin would be offered to become an assassin again . All I had to do was hand the dagger to someone else before it was taken away

Yep. That works in the unpatched game only. In the patched game, the shopkeeper always finishes what he is saying before your character can do anything else.
