Armus Jallak and Aneuhl J'harna

”After you.” – Armus repeated, since Aneuhl had not moved. Aneuhl again did not reply, and glancing at him, Armus could see that his gaze was fixed on a man walking towards them, about a hundred feet away.

”You know him?” – Armus asked.

Aneuhl nodded slowly, "Well, not really, but we spoke briefly before I was called before the council..."

”Ah. Were he also accepted the guard would have quite possibly told him that we had come here. Shall we wait to see whether this is where he is headed?”

"We could, or we could eat. I'm hungry." Aneuhl complained and brightened, "If he's gotten in, we could invite him to join us?"

”Waiting won’t hurt us. He’s coming quite clearly this way, and he’ll be here in a few seconds anyway.”

"Well, all right..."

Machaon’s steps brought him to the entrance to the tavern.

OOC: thanks to Calaethis for writing Aneuhl for this post.

For Rastheme Chombra:

Putting down the light-grey feather he had been writing with, the man sitting next to Pieter Horsfeld spoke.

"I have heard of the Axebeard clan. The reputation of your clan is known to us, and it is also known that not any dwarf can be accepted among you." The man picked up the feather again, then as an afterthought added: "Some even call the selection procedures elitist."

"That's enough Jorge." - Pieter Horsfeld interrupted. "You'll have to excuse him. He has had problems with dwarves in the past."

The man, who Horsfeld had just called Jorge made to reply, but a glare from Horsfeld silenced him, and he dutifully scribbled on the parchment in front of him, while Horsfeld continued to speak.

"The description of your fighting technique does definitely sound quite unusual for a dwarf, but if it was enough for you to be accepted among the Axebeard, it shall certainly be proof enough of your skills for us."

"I just have one more question. Some foes can not be defeated by physical strength, or sharp reflexes. What would you do in a situation, where you were confronted against such an opponent?"

Rastheme

Rastheme smirked at the man who had been called Jorge, he would address the man's statement and thinly veiled insult as he addressed Pieter. "Indeed the Axebeard's are hard to get into, largely because you have to be born into the clan, but that doesn't guarantee a spot in the guard, it just means that you'll train to be a warrior, lacking the bulk of my kin was a rather large hindrance, and I had to learn to be better than any three of my kin in order to sufficiently impress the elders that I was fit for something other than cleaning latrines, once I had done that I had to keep impressing them or risk getting shuffled off, in the end there was little else for me to improve on but tacticals and small unit tactics, which they refused to provide as I was too young, so I left when my term was up, if recalled I would finish whatever my current task was and stand at their sides, but I am content enough travelling for the moment. Now as for fighting something that can't be harmed by steel or speed, there are other ways to defeat such monstrosities, dropping a hillside on a vampire may not kill it, but it will damn sure inconvenience it long enough to mount a proper defense, those that can only be injured by sorcery I have no problem leaving to sorcerors, and if I have to act as a meat-shield to give the mage time to fry it, then I've served my position as both a warrior and a Wallman honorably. Thinking outside of preconceptions and adapting to a changing battlefield environment are the keys surviving when one set of tricks or tactics you rely upon ceases to work." He crossed his arms over his chest, feeling the comfort of his braided beard and the reassurance of the axes on the bandolier across his chest, they would either accept him, or not, and he would not fidget while they decided, signs of outward nervousness tended to be offputting, and if he showed he needed the job too much they might not believe the truthfulness of his words.

Machaon

Machaon spotted Aneuhl as he neared the tavern and raised his hand in greeting. He could not remove the smile from his face as he approached.

"I've been accepted to join the expedition! I'm guessing that from your presence here you were accepted as well? This is great news, and deserves a celebration! A room full of thugs and two scholars are chosen! A great day for research! A great day for study! A great day for us!"

Machaon took a step towards the tavern, his staff in the air before him like a beacon leading the way, when he noticed the stranger with Aneuhl.

"Oh! My apologies, I am Machaon." He extended his hand in greeting. "Are you going on this expedition as well?"

For Rastheme Chombra:

"Very well, master dwarf. I am happy to say that we have reached a near consensus." - he glanced at Jorge. The fact that nothing had been said between the six people facing Rastheme betrayed the fact that magic was being used to communicate between them.

Horsfeld continued. "The others have gone to a tavern to have lunch, and after that you shall be briefed in on the details of the mission. If you wish to join them, the tavern is only about a ten minute walk from here. A guard can show you the way if you wish."

Armus Jallak

Armus took the extended hand, and shook it warmly.

"Indeed I am. Would have been no mission without the information I brought back." Armus explained: "You might have heard of me. I was that sole survivor who crept back into town barely alive two weeks ago."

"But come now! It is not the time to speak of such things now. Let us enjoy a fine meal." He walked past Machaon, and entered the tavern, the two scholars following him.

"Where the bloody hell have you been Armus, me lad?" - the booming voice of the tavern's proprietor, a large man, sailed through the air at them. "Has my cooking lost its appeal to you, you rascal?" Someone treating Armus, a man clearly in his thirties like this was quite an unusual sight.

"John!" - Armus exclaimed, as he shook the man's hand. "I was away for a few months, and it was your cooking which managed to bring me back. Table for three?"

"Second on the right. Be with you in a moment."

Armus, Aneuhl and Machaon sat at the table.

"I suggest you to take the roast turkey or chicken as it is John's specialty, but if you two don't want to, you don't have to." - he said with a wink.

Aneuhl shrugged, "Sure? Why not. Chicken sounds good." He smiled slightly, "It's actually been a while since I had it. A couple of years, I think."

Armus stretched in the chair and smiled.

"You came to one of the best places then where you can get it."

"What's that I hear, Armus? You don't consider my chicken outright the best now?" - came the innkeep's voice from next to their table. "What drinks can I bring you three?" - he asked.

"Seems like you're old friends," Aneuhl murmured, and shook his head declining the offer of drink, "Just water, if you please." he paused, "Unless you have any fresh fruits mashed into a pulp?"

"I'll see what fruit we have and tell you when I come back. I guess you'll have the usual, Armus eh?" Armus nodded and the innkeeper continued. "And what can I bring for you food and drinkwise young master?" - he asked Machaon.

Machaon

Machaon beamed at the innkeeper as he rummaged in a small belt pouch for some coins. He slapped a few onto the table as he ordered.

"A mug of ale for me, and I'll try that roast turkey. This is a celebration!"

He turned to the other two at his table. "Join me in a round? My treat, in honor of our good fortune! Aneuhl, surely you can't toast with just water? Ale is one of nature's bounties, and should be enjoyed together!"

"Bu-but I don't drink!" the youngster replied aghast, putting both hands up as though to pacify them. "You - you don't understand!" he ploughed on, "The last time... the last time I was throwing up and oh my," his expression turned sheepish, "I am told," he lowered his voice, "That I was um, dancing on the table - topless - with um, two ladies beside me. They too, were um, topless." He had turned red, "Needless to say, I swore never to touch a drop of the stuff ever again."

By now, he was completely scarlet from ear to ear and utterly sheepish.

Rastheme Chombra

Rastheme nodded, allowing the edges of his mouth curl slightly into an almost grin, "Aye that sounds like a good idea, I don't eat in the morning, a full belly too early dulls the senses, so by the time midday arrives I've usually had only a few strips of dried beef or mutton, I wanted to finish this interview before taking my sup. I look forward to hearing what I've signed on for," he chuckled slightly at his joke, then realised the humans probably wouldn't understand and stopped, dwarven elders nearly always cautioned young dwarves against volunteering before knowing exactly what they've volunteered for, the lesson was usually drilled into the head of potential Axebeards by making the first eager volunteers clean chamber pots and peel the hardy tubers that were cultivated for food.
