Just got this today.
Great Game!!! Possibly the best game ever!!! Currently almost defeating the Gaul's in the north. I sent my grandson up there to take there capital. He is now a good a general as is granddad. For some reason people in the senate are jealous of is military victories. FUN STUFF!!!! I am proud of that boy unlike my other grandson who has a singel influence as a state, what a useless boy, I don't even think we could be related. I am pretty old for a Roman almost 60 so I am expecting to pop off anytime now. Will I die of old age in this game if I am not eventually killed in battle? If so might as well head north to lead a final battle. Have not had a problem with money yet. I usually head into provinces with a mediocre army and then hire mercenaries who I send into battle first. Since most of them are usually killed I don't have to pay many of them again the next turn. The Senate wanted me to blockade a neutral port to the south. I swear they are trying to get me to fight a war on two fronts. Anyone tell me what dogs are like. I have been thinking about adding some to my armies to chase down fleeing troops, but they are quite expensive. Is it better to just recruit more calvery? Best game ever is a little too much credit for this game imo, just wait until you've played it for a week, then we'll see if the repetative actions are still as amusing to you as the first time. I'm not bored with the game already, i like this genre too much for that, but having to simulate 5,6, or even 7 seabattles after every friggin turn, is becoming a real drag after a while.
I also found a glitch, it might be because of a scratched CD, dunno really, but the Carthaginian campaign keeps crashing for me, after 3 or 4 turns, it doesn't happen in any of the other campaigns. I'm also curious how it's possible that if you've just started a new campaign, after merely 5 turns some CPU opponents have massive fleets in the water, while the best you have at that time is two stinking ships. Basically you have to secretly build up a fleet in a faraway corner of the map, or it will be blown out of th water by your enemies after every turn. Good luck trying to transport an army to the other side of the Mediteranean like that. ![]() I had to give up on my first attempt, the House of Brutii had simply grown too strong for me and the House of Julii to win that one, my second attempt went more succesfull, but is in the fridge right now, because i got curious about other nations units and building style, so i started the Carthaginian campaign, which was dramatic because of the crashes. The Greek campaign wasn't available when i first played this game, but showed after i chose the Carthaginian campaign. I found this to be the most easy campaign yet. You control a relative small piece of land with a lot of cities in it. That's prfect, small and compact, yet strong in numbers. As a result conquering your neighbours isn't a problem playing the Greeks. Pretty soon i conquered the Macedonians and Dahcians, and money kept rolling in. Right now my armies are at the gates of Rome, and i have more than 2.5000.000 to spend. [ 10-10-2004, 12:17 PM: Message edited by: johnny ]

I wish you actually could control sea battles. It would've made it so much cooler. =/

That would have been the only thing I could find to add. Different ship units and sea battels would have been really cool.
I have finally defeated the Gaul's that had there final base right in the middle of Spain. Since I am here I may as well take over Spain. I have the most advanced fraction in Rome. I guess that is a good thing. I have taken all of central Europe. To the west Spain, to the East the Germans, and to the North the Brits. German is already at war with two fractions so they may be the easiest to defeat, but Spain is pinned down. Hmmm... I wonder when those other two Roman Fractions will turn on me? I love the little speeches that the generals give right before battle, nicely done. [ 10-10-2004, 01:37 PM: Message edited by: pritchke ] |

Here's one thing that's also kinda disturbing.... some conquered cities keep you occupied throughout the entire campaign, because they keep revolting. It's impossible to pull your army out and leave a small garrison to keep the peace. How on earth can a band of rag tag peasants throw a seasoned army of veterans out of the city and take over control ? Recapturing the city isn't a problem, but you have spend money on restoring the damaged buildings over and over again, not to mention retraining the troops. And a couple of turns later the same shit happens all over again.
![]() Btw... i thought i was nearly done with my Greek campaign, but the last Roman cities are impossible to capture. All the time i've been crushing every enemy army and sack every city fairly easy, but the closer i get to Rome, the more invincible the Romans become. I've send at least a dozen armies to Capua and Rome without any succes, i get "crushing defeat" after "crushing defeat". Have the Romans invented some kind of magical brew like in the Asterix comics ? ![]()

Are you playing the battle yourself or letting the AI do it?
Ai are never very good...

Dogs do cost a bit upfront but have low upkeep costs and as long the handlers survive a battle, the dogs regenerate every turn. I send the dogs in first followed by the main vangaurd. Then I pull back the handlers to fight again next turn.
