A friend of mine hasn't been able to make contact with his family on holidays in Malaysia.
Hopefully they just haven't been able to get to a phone, and hopefully they will soon.

Yep, I'm watching it on Sky News, 23,700 so far. They say experts are coming to tell us how not to let this happen to us. A bit late I'd say.

No tectonic plate borders.

I think the nearest one in Britain would be the one crossing Iceland, and even that is moving in the wrong direction.

I'm just watching an ITV Special report on it, and some of the images they are showing are absolutely terrible, children being swept away into the ocean.

Deathcount is now 25,000, with 15 British dead.

The amazing thing is, the Tsunami's waves carried as far as Kenya and Somalia, over 3000 miles away. They were showing the pictures from Africa's east coast, and the waves were still violent and fast.

They know now that it is more powerful than every earthquake in the world in the last 5 years, and twice as powerful as the one in Iran last year that killed 30,000.

An ITN reporter summed it all up with this quote:

"It's the furious rath of nature, against the flimsy whim of man. There was only one winner, and tens of thousands of losers.

So some here who haven't already seen a map for this, here's a link that shows the affected area.

Link to news story

The map is at the bottom of the article.

Glad to hear your dad's okay, Lavi and that Dundee seems to be with us still. I do hope Callum & Yorick and anyone else from here that lives in that area are okay and my heart goes out to those 1000's who did not survive and their families who are now displaced.

Just to add, I found that (those actually) island that I mentioned that I heard about 5 years ago watching the Discovery Channel. Actually found a few sites about it. Just wanted to post em so I didn't sound like an idiot LOL.

Pretty interesting reads, each site has it's own perspective on it.

Here's one where they mentioned New York:

Here's one basically explaining how it probably won't happen and/or it would be extremely rare:

Can you just imagine though a Mega Tsunami?! *shiver*

It is truely a tragic event that is hard for me to even imagine, sitting here in my safe home in England. I cannot even begin to know how the people of those unfortunate countries are feeling.

Such a tragedy, so close to Christmas. Truely horrific.

Oh god, I'm seeing some news sites quoting the dead as 40,000+ now.

I am going to sticky this, and rename the header so people know exactly what this thread is about.

Also:

1.Quake May Have Altered Earth's Rotation --may have shortened the day by 3 microseconds.

2. Rattled Planet orbit, changed map of Asia...
http://sg.news.yahoo.com/041228/1/3pim1.html

This is something the world will never forget. And btw, it really angers me to see that the USA and European Union are sending just 20 million for help efforts. We can do a LOT better than that. This is a disaster of biblical proportions, and will require at least 100 Billion I would imagine. Right now, they need fresh water, food, clothes, and medicine. Please visit the red cross or red crecent or your local charity and help. We're gathering some stuff now.
