The flip-side: an American experience in Canada.

Flying into Vancouver last summer, I was almost probed by the most anal (pardon the pun) customs guy I've ever come across. He was such a ba$tard.

Yes, I looked terrible. (flying Tokyo-Chicago-Vancouver in 2 days does that)

No, I didn't have an "onward ticket." I fly non-revenue half the time.

No, I didn't have my friend's address and phone # ready for inspection. I needed to get on the net, quickly, to get them.

When this guy told me I was an "immigration threat", because I seemed dodgy, I laughed at him. Which pissed him off. All I could think was "if all Canadians are as friendly as this guy, I'm getting on the next plane to NYC."

He took my wallet and pulled everything out--he even inspected the condom! He asked me how much money I earned a year, how much my flat cost etc. I politely told him that I wasn't sure of the exact figures (the flat was provided by work) and that I wasn't comfortable discussing them with a stranger anyway.

Then he made a triumphant discovery: a plastic ziplock in my backpack which was half full of laundry detergent. You could almost see his eagerness when pulled it (and one sock) out of my bag.

"What's this?"

"Laundry powder."

"Really. What happens if I test this and it's not laundry powder?"

"Then I'll finally know why my whites aren't very white."

Conclusion: Canada's cool; Customs people suck.

Same as in the US then. But the Canadian populace was firmly behind Chretien's decision about the Iraqi war.

Anyway I havent' experienced anything like this when I've been visiting US. Of course I've never been in California, only in the neighbouring states and on the east coast. And the people there are not much different from the people here. Of course the tend to pronounce things in a very weird way, rough for instance , and what the heck is a soda?

Hmm I don't mean to sound rude, but travelling with detergent in a plastic bag isn't the smartest thing to do. Sure a test will settle that it isn't drugs but why place yourself in that situation in the first place? As for customs, all their employees are rude. And that goes for your side as well.

BTW, how did this thing turn into a hockey thread? Djinn, you very well know that there are no American hockey teams. They're just Canadian teams on vacation.

Oh man that's great! Customs people in all countries are jerks so it's usually expected to be treated badly.

Just because our governments don't like each other much, doesn't mean that we as citizens can't. I conduct a considerable amount of business with the US, and apart from one time, US customs have been great. Having said that though, it doesn't matter which customs agency you're dealing with, if you look unkempt you're going to get hassled.

I have no problem with the average US citizen, I get along with most if not all of the US citizens on this forum, but just because I don't care for the Bush governments way of doing things, doesn't mean I'm going to blame Joe American for it, and I'd like to think that Joe American isn't blaming Bill Canuck for some of Chretiens namby pamby BS.
