It's worth being noted that Apache can also be run on Windows...the lead that Unix -based platforms had in the past isn't as clear now...

Hotmail (MSN, Live Mail) account is free, using the MSN network (with MSN Messenger, Windows Messenger, Live Messenger, Trillian, Gaim, whatever...) is free. Of course they have ads, but so do all the other big email providers like Yahoo, Google, etc...

Oh and for the record: I use both OS-s, because I need both.
