Seriously, though, picking out 2 sucktastic movies doesn't show no female superhero movies have been made. X-Men. Underworld. Keep your eyes peeled, I believe Wonder Woman is in the pipeline (edit: d'oh missed the reference in your post). If you're worried about a greater than 50/50 split of male/female superhero movies, look to the comic books from whence they originate, and look to the historical market split between guys and women who buy comic books. And look at it this way. My Super Ex-GF is funny because women will do these sort of conniving underhanded things to get back at a guy. And conniving and underhandedness is funny. My Super Ex-BF would be about a stalker who was bordering on physical abuse, and that's just not funny. [ 07-13-2006, 10:22 AM: Message edited by: Timber Loftis ] |

Are there that many female heroins in the marvel and Dc universe that carry their own titles? We have wonder woman but she has never been a strongly written character, you had she hulk and spider woman big deal. I think Black widow could be done well if you had there right creative team as well as Storm. Magik would be an interesting tale if she was written older but she does not have wide appeal to the masses. Nova could be done well with the cosmic thing going on, there is a lot you could do with her and galactis.
There is not a lot for movie studios to choose from. They have to make money and all the comics that make money have male leades.

Underworld is a great movie with a female lead. I'm a total underworld fanboi.

See, I knew that, even if you guys didn't agree with me, you'd have the decency to be nice about it. I brought up this same rand in a debate community of livejournal and I've been getting a bunch of people telling me it's "silly" to get offended over a movie, people telling me they're "sick and tired" of women like me, people insulting my parents, and someone calling me an "uppity feminist bitch."
You guys have class. ![]()

I Loved the first Blade, but 2 was just OK and three stunk up the theater.
IMO if you want a solid female 'hero' movie look at Underworld and U:Evolution. Not typcial superhero fare but similar fantasy Genre and great movies. The "violence against males funny/violence against females not funny" double standard in movies is simply a reflection of the real world. We live in a world where a woman cutting off or ripping off a male's sex organs is fodder for comedians, where men in prison being raped on an ongoing basis is considered "just punishment", and where female teachers raping 13 year old boys result in cry's for leniency and suspended sentances (as well as ADULTS telling the boy he should be GRATEFUL!). Turn ANY of those situation around and you'd have levels of outrage that would guarantee a media frenzy. A lot of it is our own fault too, men sit and watch this crap and NEVER SAY A WORD. We stoically accept the ubiquitous groin kicks, the castration jokes, the constant portrayal in media of the abuse of men as if it's the way things are supposed to be. We're apparently supposed to be "tough enough to take it". It's a crock. |

And yes, I AM a heavy duty comic book fan or at least used to be. I happened to like all three of the Blade movies, myself. Then again, there's a whole different theme to why I liked those. Touches on a few topics best not brought up by myself, really. I do believe that the third movie did have a few "far out there" themes, such as Dracula being immune to sunlight, but it IS a movie. And by the way, everyone, for your connectivity issues: Blade HAS fought alongside Wolverine (X-Men) and The Punisher The Punisher has fought (with and against) Daredevil, Wolverine, and Spider-Man, not to mention The Incredible Hulk Wolverine, The Incredible Hulk, and Spider-Man teamed up with Ghost Rider to become a "replacement" Fantastic Four for a small period of time Spider-Man has teamed up with the Fantastic Four on a few occasions Ghost Rider has "caught up to" The Punisher, Wolverine, and Spider-Man, as well as Blade The Beast (X-Men) has been on the Avengers as a reserve member with Spider-Man and don't forget, Dr. Doom (from The Fantastic Four) has beat up on just about everyone mentioned here at least twice. why? because he is Dr. Doom. what does this have to do with women in comics/movies? a lot, when you consider the numerous threads between the characters involving women characters: Storm (as well as most of the X-Men) had to face Dracula at least once. Magneto does have a son and a daughter (Quicksilver and The Scarlet Witch) who could easily make an appearance in the next X-Men movie (if it is made). Wolverine... that's a book in and of itself when it comes to the women whom have been in his life or that he's affected (and no, many of them CAN and regularly DO hold their own in a fight. a couple have laid the smackdown on him.) end statement though: what the heck is so funny about a woman throwing a GREAT WHITE SHARK through a guy's apartment window while he is there with ANOTHER WOMAN? if it was a guy doing that, it'd be grounds for "Super Villainy 101" to come into play. if this is supposed to be a heroine doing all this stuff, how is she still a heroine? if it were hero, he'd be toast. (this is just to connect all the movies I can recall by Marvel in the past ten years.) [ 07-13-2006, 02:34 PM: Message edited by: Mozenwrathe ]

I didn't read everybody's post so I may be repeating.
What about, Jean Grey-Phoenix, the fantasic 4 chick, storm, rogue... now, the Uma movie looks really stupid. I thought they could have made charlie's angels and action movie, not a stupid, whatever it was. But, oh no, we can't have that with girls, right! Would underworld or eon flux or ultra violet be kinda super heroish? [ 07-13-2006, 02:44 PM: Message edited by: Variol (Farseer) Elmwood ]
