...agree, like i posted, the would be communism in the USSR and eastern Europe did not work. Sure. because it WAS no communism, but besides the fact that it has quiete obviously not been developed for normal human beeings the IDEA is quiet great and does work really good on a smaller grade (look at the Kibbuz in Israel)... ...I lived in the GDR for all my life and i am still living in what is left, i only have first hand information on the GDR but one thing is clear : We had no poverty, no hunger, no unemployment and we had a good life - we lacked many things, which were quiet common in other industrial nations like most kinds of electronics (well we had them actually, but no one could afford), but our life was not bad. Sure, it is against any human right to build a wall around a country to keep the citizens in - but communism as i encounterd in the GDR was not all too bad.

quote: Yeah well, the 40 year old ex-communist I stayed with in Berlin this year has opinions and experiences that contradict yours. Now what? Sounds like you may have had blinkers on since the majority of East Germans kicked out Communism. Check out East Berlin now. Now it's the funky part of town, wheras before it was looserville. |

i am from east berlin (prenz'l berg) it has always been funky. although nowadays its hard to find people who lived there longer than 10 years. most of my friends agree with me.
maybe the experiences of your 40 year old ex-communist contradict mine - i lived in the GDR only for 15 Years and maybe i have not seen all the bad things the people did not kick out communism. we had our first free elected government and were ready to go our own way and were suddenly 'annected'. have you been to the rest of east germany. they still get less pay for the same work. after the 'reunification' many companies were sold to west german investors, who closed these companies to eliminate concurrence. you would not believe what was going on here.
