It seems to me that socialists are always putting the cart before the horse... which is to say that they assume that people's fundamental behaviours are formed by the government they find themselves a part of. I find it interesting that the western university blinded "intelligencia" tend to be most susceptable to this pretty but substanceless delusion.

Socialism has been and will continue to be a failure in it's pure form because people simply don't fit the mold that socialism attempts to force them into. Capitalism and Democracy are imperfect but more closely match human nature... it's not BECAUSE we live in western (Capitalist/Representative republic) society that we think the way we do... it's the fact that we think the way we do that makes western governments (Capitalism mixed with a smattering of socialism) the most viable system for humanity at this point in our development.

Everybody's equal, but somebody always has to be more equal than others

lol... I'm not trying to pick on Barry... I sincerely respect ANYONE who's willing to stand by a position (and he's done that)... but that doesn't mean we can't debate the topic ad-nauseum! Besides, I'd personally LOVE it if someone could put forward an argument for a non-western approach to organizing ourselves that I could believe in... cause I'm not sure the route we're taking can work long-term. In fact I believe it CAN'T, in areas like the environment (your balliwick as I recall TL) it's FAR too focused on short term profits at the expense of conservation and sustainability.

Heh heh. Well, I guess we can all find the common ground in thinking that too much greed is a 'bad' thing?

Accountability and transparency. Two things essential for ANY government to do its job efficiently, with minimal corruption.
