The article mentioned it, but it's in Arizona, a very warm place in the US, check out the temp's for Phoenix sometime (his jail is in the same county)

It also failed to mention how much $$ his measures have saved local taxpayers and that he has an 85% approval rating. lets see if I can track it down.

http://www.cnn.com/US/9907/27/tough.sheriff/

I didn't quote the whole article, as much of the information is repeated in the other quotes.

Quote:
For the Maricopa County sheriff, who opened the nation's largest tent prison in 1993, saving taxpayer pennies matters more than comforting convicted felons.

"We took away coffee, that saved $150,000 a year. Why do you need coffee in jail?" says Arpaio, patrolling the dusty, barren grounds. "Switched to bologna sandwiches, that saved half a million dollars a year."

Arpaio makes inmates pay for their meals, which some say are worse than those for the guard dogs. Canines eat $1.10 worth of food a day, the inmate 90 cents, the sheriff says. "I'm very proud of that too."

Arpaio boasts of his chain gangs for men and women, which "contribute thousands of dollars of free labor to taxpayers each month," according to his Web site

Arpaio, who has also settled a civil suit with the U.S. Department of Justice over jail conditions, brushes off charges of brutality.

"That's garbage. Look at my officers. We run the safest jail system in the U.S.," he said.

Arpaio is among the state's most popular office-holders. He enjoys an 85 percent approval rating among voters in the county, which at 9,200 square miles is larger than some states, and includes the city of Phoenix.

Even some inmates treat him like a celebrity. As the sheriff stands in a group of female prisoners, one presents a legal pad.

"You want an autograph? What you got here? What's your name?" he asks.

On another occasion, a male prisoner, a look of anger on his face, tries to talk to the sheriff, who quickly interrupts:

"You have been convicted. You're doing your time. Do your time and shut your mouth and do what you have to do."
Link, what he's saying is that if people will do it out of their own free will in even hotter environments with no criminal record, the prisoners shouldn't complain because they have to do it because they deserve it.

Well, I hate to be the humanitarian voice, here, but this kind of goes against the typical modern sentiments of imprisonment. Imprisonment, nowadays, exists to keep dangerous individuals out of society. It's more of a system designed to protect the public than it is a system to punish.

Personally, I can admire the fact that the prisoners are indeed treated like prisoners (there was an article in Readers Digest on this guy a couple of years ago; they talked to an inmate, and he said "It's like we're prisoners or something" lol), but this guy is close to the line.

Well, by that logic, hte public will onyl be safe until the prisoners' parole, with this system, the public will be safe while the prisoners are in jail, and likeyly when they are out.

Ladyzekke, heh I liked it also.

However, Hivetyrant pointed out that it was too large in size (420kb - limit is 150kb) So it's gone

Both are in the desert.
Both are hot places.
Both parites are living in severe, harsh conditions.
One group signed a dotted line, and swore an oath.
The other group broke an oath and walks a dotted line.
