Another thing that was bothering me, was as you know I'm a Marine Engineer, and the last ship I was on should have been in the area.

According to my companys website, they are actually in the Med, but I beleive this to be wrong, as my ships schedule hasnt changed in the last two years.

This is bad, I just know about the news when I read the morning newspaper just now. Turn on the tv and saw the reports coming in. It also showed the damage the tsunami made. very very frightening.

Nice to hear your dad is okay Lavindathar.

I heard the news report on the car radio coming into work. Emergency personnel (fire, police, ambulance) can’t reach the victims because the roads are congested… Shoreline areas devastated… people who have lost everything but the clothes on their backs…

My heart goes out to those who have lost their loved ones…

Its a terrible terrible disaster that struck these countries. this is possible the worse place on earth where an earthquake could have struck. places like LA and Toyko are build to survive these kinds of natural disasters, but India, Sri Lanka and Bangadesh are densly populated areas with bad infrastructure and poorly build houses. my heart goes out to all victims and their family.

Absolutely horrible tragedy, I'm glad your dad is OK Lavi. I saw a program about 5 years ago on the Discovery Channel re tsunamis. After that I couldn't stop thinking about what it would be like, and I even had nightmares for months afterwards just from thinking about it. I mean it would just scare the hell out of me to see the ocean all of the sudden start to suck back, and then to see this huge 40 foot wave coming towards me at a fast speed, knowing I most likely don't have enough time to run away. Horrifying!

And a downright awful shame if there was some way they could have used a warning system to warn these 11,000 and up people what was coming. My heart goes out to all those people, it is just totally devastating. I hope they can rescue those stranded tomorrow and U.S. help arrives.

There is no warning system for Tsunami's in that part of the world...or so I recall.

The only place where Tsunami warning sensors exist are in the Pacific.

But, they reckon it took 3 hours from the waves forming to actually hitting.

Well they need to have a warning system, and three hours warning ahead of time could have saved a lot of lives. Cause yeah, that's one thing I learned re watching that Discovery Channel show, tsunamis can happen and travel very far. The show mainly focused on this one area, and unfortunatly I do not remember where it was, but it was somewhere that had a volcano, and this huge rock shelf is attached to it, that is eventually fated to fall at some point, and when it does there is a very large possibility of it hitting the water and causing a tsunami, which could travel for they said 6 hours down the ocean and hit the New York coastline are, IF it happens the way they say that is, and none can predict when it will happen, could be ages from now. Just amazing how far a giant wave can travel.

Did you know this happened one year and one day after the earthquake in Iran last year where 30.000 people died?

Just terrible.

Woah.. Weird Jorath. BTW, I have a theory that bad quakes happen on full moons--because of the force of gravity and such-- and sure enough, I go look at the calander, and it was a full moon yesterday! I'm very glad your father made it out ok Lavi. I know-- a wave hitting you at 500mph is like a 747 crashing into you. It'll flatten everything in it's wake. I hope they don't have more quakes. god, seeing this is just horrible.

My heart and sympathies go out to all people in that area, and to all IWers especially. That force and that damage are just amazing, and a reminder that we don't own the world... it owns us when it wants to.

Glad to hear your dad is okay, Lavindathar.
