I prefer to choose among the NPCs that are in the game, so this is probably my favourite party:

Me (CG Berserker/Priest)
Good tanker, and can cast good spells while wearing a armour, dual-wielding Mace
Minsc
Another good tanker, plus that he makes sure that I'm never bored while playing
Keldorn
A third good tanker, and has good Paladin-abilities
Aerie
This awesome lady is my main-source for magic
Jan
Decent Thief, decent Mage, good for range support, and is maybe even more funny then Minsc
Haer'Dalis
Good abilities, funny guy

That brings us up with three and a half tankers, two priests, two and a half Mages, and two Rogues.

My favorite party (the only one I completed all the way through SoA AND ToB with) was:

My main character, Dalen (Chaotic Good Male Human Berserker dualed to Thief)
Anomen (Fighter/Cleric)
Minsc (Ranger)
Nalia (Primary Mage)
Imoen (Second Mage, about as powerful as Nalia by the end of SoA and definitely so on into ToB)
Aerie (Backup Cleric and Mage, and very powerful into ToB as well.)

It was the best blend for me; my own character was both a Tank and a Thief, and then with Minsc and Anomen, I had two additional powerful tanks. Anomen and Aerie had the cleric spells, and I was definitely mage-heavy with three magic users (Nalia, Imoen, and Aerie). Minsc's ranger spells also came in handy in a pinch later on. Also: everyone in the party was of Good alignment, so no b*tching about high rep points.

With this party, I rarely had to reload a battle, and actually won the endgame without a reload (for SoA, that is.

My current party now consists of:

Me (Kensai at lvl 12, gonna dual class him into mage at lvl 13)
Keldorn (inquisitor)
Minsc (Ranger)
Mazzy (Fighter)
Nalia (Mage/Theif)
Aerie (Mage/Cleric)

Once i got to lvl 13, i'm gonna dump Nalia and proceed to the asylum to get Imoen back. Also, should I dump Mazzy and get Jan Jansen instead. IMHO, Jan is just for laugh only, I don't think he's any use at all to my party. (If you're trying to convince me, don't talk about his theifing abilities, cause Nalia/Imoen would be just the same with a few potions of Master Thievery...)
