Of course if youve broken it badly it might do something serious like puncture a lung. (That can kill you by the way)

And even if you havent broken a rib it sounds like somethings isnt right. Go see a doctor.

Glad you're taking the right decision to go and see a doctor, Megabot. If a rib is broken, it will heal incorrectly and the chances are that they will have to break the rib again at the hospital later on to ensure that it does heal properly, so you're far better off getting this over with now

And don't worry about your job, there are plenty of other opporunities out there if you keep a bit of a lookout. But first get the rest you need for this injury to heal. Besides, summer's here, and who wants to be working anyway?

Hope you feel better soon!

Last time I thought I broke a rib, the doctor did nothing. He said as long as you can breath without pain, there was nothing he could do. He didn't even take x-rays. I had no problems since, so he may have been right. The doctor will probably poke around at you and say the same. It's hard to cast or set a broken rib so they usually let them heal on their own. Just don't do anymore heavy lifting for a while.

well ribs are more flexible than other bones so compound fractures on ribs are unnlikely. Personally I think it's just been dislodged. If it was broken, MB would be in utter agony

Isn't that true with most broken bones; utter agony? I mean main bones (leg, arm)

The danger if it is broken, and he falls, or is playing sport or something, and then it punctures his lung.

Those bones aren`t main, they`re more peripheral
