Comparing crime rates between countries is plainly ludicrous. There are different ways of defining the crime, different levels of reporting the crime and different methods of policing the crime.

The only crime that is worth comparing is murder.


Crime's sister, illegitimacy, is also high in Britain.

Actually, I quite appreciated it. And, if you don't think looking across the board at social morals is worthwhile, then how can I take you seriously?

Murder is the only crime worth comparing because it is almost 100% reported and the definition is almost universal. What constiutes a robbery in Britain isn't necessarily the same as elsewhere. If a couple get robbed in Britain that is counted as two crimes, in most other countries that is only one crime.. In some countries minor robberies aren't reported because the police have no interest in pursuing them. It's not rocket science!

As for social morals - are you telling me that a couple who have a child without getting married are immoral? Get a life pal!

No, I'm saying that couples who get married are MORE moral. It's a traditional social norm, and that plays a part in determining the morality of a society. The legal drawbacks to bastardy and adultery have been fairly and justly removed from our society, but it's still a morality issue. Morality is a sliding scale. As for the life, I have one -- to quote Denny Crane: "I like being me. What else is there?"

Anyway, that's about all I have time to explainify.

But, I'll leave with my own petty dig to match yours: "Maths" is plural.
