Blimey Felix, I hope that was already on your computer - I would hate you to do that much typing on my account!

So, in a nutshell, we were in support of the colony, in order to prevent the spread of communism, which as we all know, did spread.
Quite correct, and the domino theory seemed like a big threat at the time.

But again, how was this setting them free? A country is free (especially in the negative, commonly Republican, sense) when it is free from external influence and left well alone.

Chewie - the reason we can't leave Iraq now is that we would end up with another Iran. With the legitimate political parties that are in place at the moment the country is already extremely close to Tehran (which, incidentally, has rather pleased the Iranians - we've tamed their mortal enemy for them). If the insurgents were allowed to gain complete control of the country then actual legislation would become radicalised and we would probably end up with unrestrained Sharia law which I don't think anyone would wish for.

Result: egg on our faces. Tens of thousands killed to create a country whose policy-makers are far more religious and far more dangerous to the west (from a terrorism point of view) than the previous regime ever was.

So we can't leave until the Iraqi armed forces are at least able to stand on their own two feet.

Even putting aside the 'egg on our face' theory, we have promised Iraq democracy and many of them have bought into that dream. Would you really subject the Shia to another tragically broken promise after what happened in 1991?

Fact of the matter is there are partisans from both sides in the media. Many of those people would rather divide us. Fortunatly we have great choice of media in an information-free society.

Anyway, The vast liberal media conspiracy is a myth.
News stations and newspapers are companies like any other. They exist to sell ads. And they'll only ever be as liberal as the conservatives who own them allow.

Also, there were never any bra burnings. One woman threw her bra into a garbage can. That's where we get that myth. Lovely how these things start, isn't it?

Ha, figures as much. Ra! Ra! Burn That Bra! is still a catchy protest slogan though.

Felix, the link you give is from CNN. Do you really expect something other than a liberal story?

I'll tell you why. To allow her this day, this freedom of speech, this freedom to travel from one location to another, and the freedom to protest the President of the United States! Now she has these freedoms, and NONE have been lost, even thou she has a loss.
Not just her freedoms, Thank you for your service.
