It's a good answer and of course I'm not excusing his crimes. It just seems that it's so rare when a father is actually willing to take responsibility for his kids that locking him up won't achieve much. It could be love?

I know Idaho caught some flak about 10 years ago (my hometown specifically) for prosecuting a fornication law that had been on the books for at least a century (it was only ever enforced against minors).

As has been said above, burn him at the stake for the pre-marital hanky panky, but there is technically no current crime now that they're married (I believe most states' statutory rape laws are specifically set up exempt marriages between minors and those of the age of consent, then again I'm no lawyer so take it for what it's worth).

We don't know specifics, but I want to know why this isn't an issue of parental neglect. What mother marries off a 13-year old to some pervert who knocked her up?

The people involved could be of Indian or some such descent, so the acceptance to marriage could be a cultural thing - you know, there's lots of weird stuff concerning adult men and young underage girls happening in India.

[/QUOTE]Because at some point parents are not able to dictate every move their child makes and have to trust them that they have relatively good judgement, obviously in this case the girl did not have good judgement, but girls are having sex earlier and earlier than they used to, and are also maturing earlier and earlier than they used to (the latter would seem to lead to the former). I believe checking into the ages of persons getting abortions should reveal the point quite easily.

The fact that the guy was nearly a decade older than her should be taken into account when figuring out his punishment. Whereas if he was a year or two older it would logically be less criminal (ie she's 16 and he's 18 or 19), but still at the very least statutory rape.

Talk law all you want -- child molestation is child molestation. What kind of sick f*** 22-year old wants to bed 13-yr olds anyway? You! Outta the gene pool!

Agreed, sort of goes along with the old addage, what's right isn't always legal, and what's legal isn't always what's right.

As far as I know, here we don't have a law that prevents sex with minors. Child molestation is just handled as a rape. Then again, I could be wrong. I haven't actually read any law books, I just assume that someone would have told me.

Then again we don't have a law that allows anyone to marry a thirteen-year old. I think the president can give some special permission or something but she doesn't do that often.

Am I the only one to notice that if he had gotten the girl an abortion, this wouldn't be a story?

I think he tried to do right by her and shouldn't
be punished...

How about a lesser punishment than the most severe one available since he showed some dignity after the fact?

I could call justice served if they want to bargain out of a maximum offense...since he did not run out on her...

I am rather interested in hearing how this pans out.
