We were talking about the war and she started slagging of islamic people and I asked her why and she said the terrorists were muslims. then I said that not all muslims are terrorists. "no only 99% of them" she said. and got really upset and I ended up kind of agreeing with her even though I know it's not true 'cause I don't really want her to start hating me too.
Or am I wrong and all muslims are potential terrorists. I just can't believe it, there is 1.3 billion of them. Some of them must be good.
I don't know many Muslims - but the ones i know are nice, ordinary people. Don't allow this young woman to make you a hypocrite, Jorath. If you stand up for what you believe in, you may help to show her how mistaken she is. And if she remains unconvinced - do you really want her friendship so much you will compromise your own inmost convictions?

Jorath, dump your friend. It's ignoront sods like her that I complained about in the thread I posted "Racism; plz don't". She has to understand that the suicide bombers who committed the atrocities on Sep 11th went against Muslim religion, and therefore cannot be branded Muslims. Your friend is extremely narrow minded, and unless she can see sense then she will probably end up in a racist gang who prey off the weakness of others.

I don't read newspapers, so have not seen it written - is it pronounced differently than it is spelled? And why are they bad? From what I have found in my copy of The Macmillan Encyclopedia, they seem to be no worse than any other sect of either Islam or Christianity, if rather fundamentally simplistic in their outlook:

Wahhabiyah - A Muslim sect founded by Muhammad ibn Abd al-Wahhab (1691-1787). It stresses the need for a Muslim State based on strict adherance to the literal authority of the Koran and Hadith. It is responsible for the vreation of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

The Saudis are ok with the West, so....?

Can you enlighten me? Oh, silly me! I'll go check on the net....!

When the Wahabists arose in Saudi Arabia they destroyed tombs and statues of Mohammads disciples, killed Muslims who weren't Wahabists, and almost destroyed the tomb of Mohammad before a HUGE outcry in the Muslim world.

Wahabists view veneration of anyone - including the Prophet, to compromise veneration of Allah and verge on polytheism. Hence the problem with photos and images of individuals that the Taliban have. They believe it is a form of veneration.

Whether the Saudis are with "us" or not is a very two faced situation. Bin Laden is Saudi and Wahabist. Wahabism is behind a lot of terrorism in the modern world. On one hand the Sauds support the U.S., yet their ideology decrys it. It's sort of like the Communist Russians embrace of partial capitalism around the war years. The Sauds are being pragmatic because of their situation.

Fljotsdale, I feel a little uncomfortable posting this because I can't quote anything directly. I read some media articles by analysts of the Middle East. As you could imagine, I've been keeping a firm finger on the pulse with everything going on.

I've been choking a bit for the last hour due to being down near Ground Zero this afternoon, and inhaling a gust of WTC dust. Apparently there is asbestos in the dust, and the word from workers is it's a lot higher than the media are saying. You need a heap to die from it, but I'm a singer and the irritation is causing coughing which affects my voice adversely.

Anyhow the Anthrax situation in the NBC? building is a bit of a worry, not to sure what's happening there.

Anyhow, Fljotsdale, basically I don't know enough about Wahabism to provide exact details. From what I read I was able to formulate opinions, but to accurately get the picture on Wahabism and the compromising situation the Saudis are in you'll have to do some research on it. Sorry Tired and not well as I said.

Have a good night, or Sunday morning when you read this.

See ya
Hugh.

Hey come on mate, that's a bit harsh. Dumping a friend for having a differing idealogy?

Hey guys, when my mate flew back from Vegas (he caught a different flight) was waiting in the lounge a little old chines lady spoke to him. Most Chinese women don't talk to Black guys like him, he said. She told him she was really nervous and frightened.

There's a positive straight away. At least one racial barrier broken down in one person.

Anyhow, after they'd been waiting for a while she screamed
"Aahh look, look, that man look like a Affaganiflan". Everyone turned to look.

The poor middle eastern man to whom she was referring just lowered his head and didn't say anything, but on the flight whenever he got up to go to the toilet people stiffened and watched his every move.

Thanks for the info, Yorick. I was not aware of any of that. Well - I knew the Saudis were opportunists, obviously. (Mind you, all countries are if we are honest).

Asbestos dust - yes, I figured they were not telling us how much was REALLY there. And I am distressed to hear that you inhaled it. Is there anything you can do to help rid your lungs of it? I would suggest you go visit a doctor as soon as you can.. don't neglect it, my friend.
DO take care!

I don't think you're right Horatio, just because someone's bigoted, racist or narrowminded on a few things don't mean that they're not perfectly ordinary and cool people the rest of the time.

From the flip side, I'm a lot like your friend.
I have a cultivated "dislike" for certain types of Singapore-Chinese and Mulims. I dont hate 'em all, but I do have major problems against certain groups, like Extremist Islamics, or certain groups of Chinese people and all that. I dont have a thing against Chinese people, just that certain groups of them get on my nerves.
Maybe thats what your friend means. Its rather hard to hate an entire race of people so long as you know at least one person who's of that race and is not everything you make that race out to be..

BTW I did not post this to spread hatred, or to invite it in the form of flames, just an opinion and a thought.
