the flight they are refering to is simply rapid movement. ie "I had to fly to work today because I was running late." and as far as the shadow spreading out like vast wings, that is a similie, comparing the shadows around the balrog, to that of the shadows that would be cast by hude wings. IMO they do not have wings.

Perhaps Balrogs CAN fly - but only when no-one is looking...

What if the Balrog is looking, can it still fly or does it have to close it's eyes?

Yeah it certainly has eyes. Whether or not it uses them, and more importantly, if it can see through them is an entirely differen discussion though

Based on what I've read, I think they do have wings - thether they are vestigial or functional, who knows.

Nice topic Attalus. I'll resist temptation to throw myself upon the grenade by adding my two bits. From what can be reasonably surmised from several of his writings, Balrogs do have wings but can not fly. However, i've seen many, many artistic impressions of Balrogs (they are without doubt the most popular of Tolkien's evil creations) and most of them are depicted without wings and, you guessed it, on the ground. The debate continues...

Version 0.1 were numerous and didn't have wings and drove chariots.
Version 1.0 were rare and did have wings and could fly, but everytime they got up to air they were already dead or in too small space or simply had other interests than flying.

We know that the Moria balrog was "flying from the ruin of Thangorodrim" and had "the shadow about it spread out like vast wings." (Both from "The Bridge of Khazad-Dum," FOTR). But if it had wings, why did it fall into the Abyss beneath Helm's Bridge? Was Galdalf's "ever hewing" him (presumably with Glamdring) interfering? I would like your thoughts.
Haha. I don't really know if Balrog has wings or not, but your message reminded me of a documentary about Tolkien that I saw a couple of months ago. It was about how he got famous, and people started harrassing him on the phone. And then it showed 'him' and his wife sleeping, the phone ringing, and he answers and there's this man with a funny American accent: "Hey... I just wanted to ask... Does the Balrog have wings?" Ahem.
