In terms of stats and raw killing power I'd have to say that Kivan beats all of the people so far listed. He's a bit of a boring NPC though. But he's stronger than Ajantis, Shar-Teel and Kaigan and more dextrous than Minsc. All in all, a very good tank.

Kivan is an excellent archer and Khalid is quite good as a hand-to-hand fighter. I often take Shar-Teel with me if I need an extra swordarm. I rarely use more fighters than the aforementioned.

Kivan is also great with two-handed swords, etc. If you have a bow, you might as well get plate mail and a big sword. With these, Kivan is second only to Minsc and Shar-teel as a melee fighter. Or third. Whatever.

I'd go with Kaigan or Minsc. Kaigan rocks, specially cuz he got HP regeneration
