I don't know the number of NPCs from each one, but it seemed like there were a LOT more of them in BG1. This, in conjuction with the more open maps (where if you accidentally wandered down the coastal area after first leaving Candlekeep you were DEAD) really gave a sense of being lost in a big world and having to sort out who you are, and what was going on.

More interesting cursed weapons, where you have to think about how the powerful magical enchantments on them offset the curse. Like the berserker sword. It's a powerful magic item early in the game, and some players might have decied to use it (I didn't), or the backbiter spear; nice damge, but it also damages you.
I actually had Jaheira use this for most of the (Location spoiler) underdark.
Also, items are harder to identify, but you can use them as enchanted weapons from the off, so if your stuck in the middle of a dungeon, with no Lore points, and no Identify spell, you just have to hope the potent looking sword you just flound won't permanently feebelmind your characters.

Purifier +4 makes for a lovely off hand weapon - 30% Magic Resistance is not to be sniffed at.

Foebane +5, now, that's a sword! Don't overlook the Minor Drain per hit effect - it's very powerful. Foebane +5 is one of the best weapons in the game.

Bastard Swords are the worst, for anyone who spent points on them in SoA. Sure, Jhor the Bleeder and the Blade of Searing are good, but their placement in the game means you have precisely two options:
1) Sprint to Chapter 5 as quickly as you can, trying to stay alive in the process
2) Be content with a Bastard Sword+1 for the majority of the game. And hey, good luck trying to kill the Balor with it.

Whatever happened to all the perfectly fine weapons we see in Shadowkeeper, but didn't make it into the game itself? I recall a Bastard Sword that granted Non-Detection and some Fire Resistance while equipped--what's wrong with that?

I second this suggestion (& hey, someone with Mod'ing skills may be able to do it...). Much as certain Evil characters can change to Good, it would be nice if Imoen could change to Evil (or at least Neutral). After everything she's been put through, it would kind of make sense, particularly if she were urged-along by her Evil sibling.

I play very few Evil parties, but when I do, I still rescue lil' sis (since I pretty much never play Chaotic Evil, I tend to at least see her back to the surface) but then debate about whether or not keeping her makes sense.

No inventory shuffle - easy switching between dual wielding, shields, bows, etc.

Balance the Clone spells. Mislead is powerful, Simulacrum is unstoppable and Project Image is... well... Ba-roken!

SoA is swarming with powerful Undead - Liches, Vampires, etc. As such, Pro-Undead scrolls should be as rare as Pro-Magic scrolls, and items like MoD+2 and Daystar should be waaay harder to obtain.

Dual wielding is too powerful, thanks to the sheer number of weapons with Equipped Abilities. Either force heavier penalties on dual wielding, or really decrease the number of the aforementioned items.

Melee owns BG2. Sorry. Although i love Magic so much better, and i'm one of those who are sure that "a well prepared Mage can take on anything", BioWare seemed to decide that each above-Goblin-level monster should have 75% MR and 3 save vs. spells, with no justification whatsoever. This is just plain stupid. Either you follow the D&D rules about MR and Saves, or you tone down all the uber items which makes melee so good.

Use a different engine. The Infinity Engine is weak.
As a result, ...

... Use a different scripting language. BAF/BCS is weak.

Less magical weapons (there was too damned many all told). Force characters to use "basic" weapons, that can break, for a longer time.(Like BGI). The best part about BGI was when you *FINALLY* got ahold of any magical weapon that was usable.
Also, more character slots than six (maybe eight?). If its too easy, just turn up the difficulty in the game. But the toughest choices I had to make, was which NPC's to take along (though Korgan was my favorite since he's always running his pie hole! LOL!). The dialog between the good and evil characters was always the most amusing.

No, the travelling was part of the rigid boredom

Map clearing was a tedious necessity to gain XP. I couldn't stand it.

I *totally* agree with that.

I also can't stand the way in ToB you walk around seeing every street-urchin weilding a Longsword of Ultimate Destruction +12. Far too many uber-items, especially in ToB.
