For detect illusions, does your thief automatically sense it, or does he/she have to be detecting traps?

you have to click the search traps button.
nice one if you got the cloak of nonedetection and stealth to the enemy mage, detecting illusions. also, the mage will often try to dispell your invisiblity meaning your other chars are free to snipe him/her down with ranged weapons.

my suggestion for thieving skills was meant nearly chronologic. i agree to skill stealthy stuff late. but IIRC there are two kinds of failure for hiding in shadows. first, with low skill, you appear instantly from out of the shadow and have to wait 10 seconds to hide again. with higher ability you stay ethereal long enough to get a hiding chance anew.

as for the one and only pickpocket item : this is the hardest pick in the game. there are 3 spectators, one is even a guard. you can send the mage searching his whatever alchemical stuff upstairs to make it a littlelittle bit easier. still it is much to much work for this one item because you need to distribute 100+ points in pickpocket and your other skills suffer from this.
there are at least 4 more items with the same or better ability in this game so : why getting trouble for this one ?

The skill tends to wrap around when you get above 250 in a skill, therefore you fail. Very similar to the charisma wrap around bug... the engine does not like negatives.

Why use Open Locks when you have spells like Knock?
