That reminds me of the old Win 3.1 game DnD. The shops there sold magic stuff using the following logic.

Q: What magic item do you want?
A: Magic sword
Q: What level?
A: Magic sword +x
Q: That will be y dollars, do you want to buy it?

Since there was an exploit or two that netted a player VERY large amounts of gold, in less than an hour, a new character could be walking around with a sword +1000, armor +1000, ring of regen +maxhealth(+x more for safety), etc...

That game sure was challenging.

You face a Dragon. The Dragon attacks and misses. (if the Dragon had a critical hit, then "you block the blow" or more rarely "your armor absorbs the damage"). You swing and hit for 1003 points of damage, killing the Dragon. Yippeee.
