I have heard many good and great things about this game, as well as some drawbacks, i.e., the NPCs you encounter really don't do much of anything for many just stand around. So, for those who have been playing the game, what is your assessment so far?

You mean like Fallout? Fallout2? Icewind Dale? Baldurs' Gate? Or Deus Ex? Or any other RPG? Well, all things considered, the wall-paper NPCs are far more involved than any RPG I've ever played.

"So, for those who have been playing the game, what is your assessment so far? "

At this point, this is the best RPG I've ever played. I'm still getting the hang of some of it and I've put in 20 hours and have just barely scratched the surface.

actually,

some NPC will follow you around and fight with you. I am refering to the quests where you have to lead people to places. And yes, if you encounter enemy they will fight with you (if they are capable).

I wouldn't say the quests are anything better than any previous RPG games, but we all love the open-end gameplay this game allow us to do. Just if there is a MP version of this I think it will be even better.

Albromor, the NPC's are very "real time" for myself. I think as a game player I have gotten use to a fast food diet of interactions with them in a sort of way. MW seems to bring it into a more realistic approach to talking, bartering, and persuasion with them I have ever seen before. Not everyone is as they seem! Lately Ive become a slight kiss-ass and it has been paying off in sale prices, information, and directions along with a little advice mixed with secrects. They are very amusing also! (And talk about tough..try a little hand to hand with a farmer once..heh!! ouch..)

This is the most in depth games I have ever played. I am begining to feel like I wont ever finish all the little details and quests that are here. Mybe once I am done I will all be assimulated into the game and become an NPC myself.. Very good game so far with me. I hope you will take your time to enjoy the depth of it as it was designed for this Im sure Good travels!

First off, Morrowind is well worth the money. I've played it for about 12 hours and look forward to playing some more of it.

However, because Morrowind has such a large world and large variety of spells/abilities, your experience with the game may differ a lot from someone else's experience.

The game is also pretty much stuck with being a personal experience. Because the game is so easily modifiable, comparing your experience with someone else's is pretty much pointless because you don't know what kind of mods they may be playing with or what bugs in the game they may be taking advantage of.

The game therefore lacks giving a player a sense of achievement. Sure, on a personal level, you may feel proud of yourself for accomplishing something; but who really cares if you can make powerful potions or have created a really awesome enchanted weapon.

I'm an ex-EverQuest player, so I was quick to note how it seems pointless to have these abilities if you do not have anyone to share what you create with.

Anyway, I just wanted to comment on how I think that Morrowind's ease of modification actually detracts from the game's appeal. It could be viewed as a detriment to the game. I'm sure there will be some interesting mods that will come out. However, what's the point? The game is so huge that if I play through the "standard" game, that is enough for me. I have no interest in playing a hacked version of the game.

ex-Everquest player... sound like a twelve sets program to me

just kidding, I use to play lots and lots of EQ long ago, and most of the problems you find in Morrowind come from the transition from a multiplayer environment to a single player experience, the "turning head to tell about the cool sword" and don't find a friend there with you.

Most people that MUD's or online RPG's for a long time find themselves in the same situation, even a game full of faults can be fun if you have the social factor, the interaction with real people its hard to beat.

Morrowind is, as you say, a personal experience, try to change you mindset while playing, using a bit of imagination also play a huge role, single player games offer things most online games cant, the possibility of changing the world, deep storylines, tons of secrets that cant be spoil to you, and the ability of gaming at your own pace, exploit those benefits, and the 'personal' experience will become as good as the online or shared one.

of course... you can always wait until NWN come out

i adore both types of games and when i play one, i have learned not to expect the experience of the other. i love both types for those reasons.

MW is a lot like RL to me, except fot the monsters, and ghosties, and killing. oh, and the loot. well, you know what i mean. when you figure stuff out in life, you're usually alone whne you do. thats life.

EQ & other mmprpgs are like going to school. you got peeps around you going thru the exact same thing you are. you can compare notes with them and share stuff, too.

2 totally different experiences that are both wonderful in thier own right. just appreciate the unique advantages of both and don't expect one to suddenly become like the other.

It's true that the interaction with NPCs is quite limited. You choose from a list of subjects, and he tells you what he knows. You will rarely find multiple choices of responses (as in BG) and then the choice is obvious.
BUT, there is much more in the game. The world is huge, comparable to EQ's Norrath, without the emptiness. Through books and factions (the different powerful groups you can join, lots of them) you slowly uncover the depth and complexity of the world. Also you can be/do anything you'd like. Want to be an assassin and sneak your way through? No problemo, the sneak-steal-backstab system is almost as good as in the Thief game. Want to become a righteous paladin? No problemo, but then what's right and what's wrong... heheh, not so easy to tell. There is no clear line between GOOD and EVIL in this world.
I guess you don't have to be a demi-god to kill the End Boss, but if you want to become one, there is enough for you to quest to become one. And if you want to kill every single living being on the Island, nothing prevents you to do it.

If you like single-player RPGs you must play MW. I can't compare it to any other game i've played. It may be too early to say so, but i think this game is a milestone in the crpg history. Both graphically and content-wise.

Well I have enjoyed the game so far however there is one aspect of it that is beginning to bother me and I am not really sure how much more I will play game because of it. I am now lvl 10 and leader of the fighters guild which is quite neat but the issue I have is the "quests" that you are sent on. To me they seem like it is the same thing over and over again... kill this guy or get this item or deliver this item, which is fine if there were some thought involved.
Never do you have to figure out a puzzle or give the quest any thought, getting to the place where person is takes the most thought of anything. (the quest giver tells you exactly where person is or exactly what to do)

Now I am not saying I dont like the game, and I have only really just started but simplicity of the quests is beginning to get tedious. Mind you I have not even begun the main quest so possibly that will be a bit more thoughtful.

Other then that gripe I really like the game, (there are a couple other minor ones but they have been mentioed on this thread already) graphics are great, gameplay is easy to learn and sound makes game feel like an epic (even if it plays same song over and over ). Anyhow I am going to keep playing for a while and hopefully the depth of quests will pick up with main story.

well i get familar with the game day per day

there is so much game-setup undocumented and hidden
at the momentan state i don't have any reload-timeout in a zone - only when i leave them - much better than at beginning - and with more game more fun comes
