I'm a bit confused about what's required to learn new spells of higher levels. At first I thought it was dependent on the level of the character - for example, you couldn't learn level 6 spells until you were level 14 or something like that. However I had a book of return for ages which my bishop couldn't use; when she reached level 12 she tried it but no good, but later on, still in level 12 she was able to learn the spell. So I'm thinking it must have to do also (or totally?) with skill points, eg she needed a certain number of points in air to learn the spell of that level?

What exactly contributes to being able to learn spells of different levels?

Also, on an unrelated note, what do I have to do to be able to talk to Saxx? I think we're about level 3 or 4 in the IUF and he won't talk to me.

Thanks

For pure spellcasters, the minimum requirements are 0 (1), 15 (3), 30 (5), 45 (8), 60 (11), 75 (14), 90 (18).

The numbers in parens are the class level of the character. The other number is the total of the spell mastery (Alchemy, Wizardry, Psionics, Divinity) plus 10% of the spell type (Earth, Air, Fire, Water, Mental, Divine).

To learn the portal spells, your bishop needs a total of at least 60 in one of the masteries + 10% air. Portal/Return can be learned by any magic class, so you need to get up there in one of the masteries.

No idea about Saxx, though. Never heard of him refusing to talk to anyone who wasn't hostile to the Umpani.

P.S. I forgot to mention, the list above corresponds to the seven levels of spells. So, for instance, you won't be able to learn 7th level spells until the character is at least 18 in his/her class and meets the mininum requirement of 90 in mastery+spell type.

All the details on spell learning (including if/when you change a character's profession), can be found here. Also, check out the signature below, might be of interest to you because it will do all the calculations for you.

Edit, added: To quote the web page...

Quote:
To become eligible to learn new higher level spells for your class, you have to meet 2 requirements: 1) minimum level in *THAT* class (not over-all), and 2) minimum skill, for *THAT* spell's spellbook & realm.

1) Minimum Level requirement:
Pure Caster Classes: Mage, Priest, Psionic, Alchemist, Bishop
Hybrid Caster Classes: Monk, Ninja, Ranger, Samurai, Lord, Valkyrie

Spell Level .... Min. Class Level
................. PURE .. HYBRID
1 ................ 1 ....... 5
2 ................ 3 ....... 7
3 ................ 5 ....... 9
4 ................ 8 ...... 12
5 ............... 11 ...... 15
6 ............... 14 ...... 18
7 ............... 18 ...... 22

2) Minimum Skill Requirement To calculate your effective skill level for a given spell:
Take your highest spellbook skill (Wizardry, Divinity, Psionics, Alchemy) that the spell in question appears in. Important for bishops or class-changed characters, since many spells appear in multiple books.

Add 10% of your *natural* skill in that spell's realm. This doesn't include temporary skill bonuses such as those from items (or profession
bonuses).

Spell Lvl ..... Min. Effective Skill Lvl
1 .................. 0
2 .................. 15
3 .................. 30
4 .................. 45
5 .................. 60
6 .................. 75
7 .................. 90

It's not as complicated as it sounds. Example: A mage, a pure caster, must be level 5 AND have an effective skill of 30 to learn Fireball, a third level Fire realm Mage spell. If he has 30+ skill in Wizardry, he's all set. He could also qualify if he has, say 28 in Wizardry and 20+ in Fire skill (10% rule).
Enjoy!

Wow thanks so much . Exactly what I was looking for

Yeah, I dunno what's up with Saxx. He fobbed us off when we weren't enlisted which I expected, but now when we're higher up he's neutral, and when we try being friendly he says something about not being able to sweet talk him. Not that we're really itching to discuss things with him, but I was just surprised.

No we didn't pickpocket him. Actually we only just started pickpocketing for the first time this morning, when we learned that Crock had a bunch of gadgets. LOL I found it humourous when I stole sollerets, upper and lower toseidos, quarrels, spellbooks from him and then sold them back immediately . Anyway I think our best communication at that time was about 65. And we can't discuss anything with him because he's only neutral, not friendly. I have an all female party, might that be a factor? Maybe he's a misogynist

That is odd, i've never heard of that. He talks to me as soon as i've enlisted; i'm almost always all female.

(edit) Give him some gold.

If you talk to him before enlisting, he'll be neutral when you try to talk to him afterwards. Although I've always been able to just "Friendly" him when he's been neutral before now.
