He's interesting, to say the least. But he can be beaten. What buffs are you using? I usually carry a surplus of Aid and Bless potions.

"but he still chops off 40-60 hit points when he penetrates my kevlar, teflon, industrial steel codpiece"

*guffaws*

That was a classic line, I have to admit. I wish I could write that well. Now, on the topic of fighting liches, can't one use Heal Scrolls to knock off some of his strength and power? I know I just used that tactic against the undead dwarves inside of Melairkyn and it worked like a charm. The problem is getting that final hit on them. I've found using Mass Heal is even better, as they tend to surround you. Not to mention if you use Mass Heal on yourself while fighting the lich, you'll be Healed and the lich ought to be affected as if hit by a Harm spell.

I use aid, bless, and bull strength but I still can't consistently hit him. In real D&D he would have been worm fodder by now. Here, he has the worms crawling out of my decomposing souless husk as I bid the boatman on the River Styx to return me to the bank from whence I started ( minus some of my fighting prowess and shiny metallic wealth. Grrrrrrrrrr!!) I can look into buying Mass healing scrolls but many of the parchment aids do not work when playing a paladin. I know what's good for the livin' is bad for the undead, but somebody needs to tell him that! The Holy Avenger powers of my sword really don't exist either like they do in the dice version of this module. It is basically just a shiny toothpick that can prick well. A Holy Avenger in the hands of a paladin should be like providing Duke Nuke-Em with the cheat code for enhanced weapons. Another thing that irks me is that the lich also shrugs off my smite evil spell as if he were little Orphan Annie and not the diabolical leader of an unholy kingdom. I vow to bring him down one way or another before my cold, lifeless hand gets carried off by a sewer rat for dinner!

I always thought the best Paladin attack against the undead was a simple laying on of hands with your charisma buffed up. At level 34, that should take him down several hundred hitpoints depending on your CHA.

Side note as well, there are no death penalties in UM. At least for the time being, it had been discussed a while back, but considering the amount of dieing we do in there...

I haven't fought that lich for a while but my higher level characters could usually deal with him. It may be that you need to reach a certain AB to be sure of hitting him regularly.

Have you tried using a bludgeoning weapon? Slashing weapons don't seem to harm the undead unless they have fire, acid, etc bonuses.

Can you imagine that? One trip down to 13 with anything but an uber character and you'd be pinging levels in reverse all the way down to pre-epic status...

Yeah, I'm thinking it wouldn't be pretty...Especially in the proving grounds.

Not just the Proving Grounds.

I still cannot believe how many times the server rolls me a low fortitude score in the Trollbark Dungeon and I get Imploded.

Protection against spell potions work but why do they always run out at the critical moment?

Let the record state that on Feb. 11, 2006, the evil Lord Nasher the Death Lich with the big nasty pointy teeth was slayed by Thorin Oakenshield (aka Sir Anthony Proudheart) After gaining two levels and using the demon sword from hell with neat nighttime light up flames, the lich was less trouble than one of the infamous arachnids dubbed "Muriel's Chosen." I was so emboldened at this success that I did indeed track down and mutilate the bloated body of Muriel herself while she cowered in front of the pathetic sign that declared she did't even have the full 3 levels of Gauntlet she so boisterously proclaimed near the entrance. Apparently her funds had dried up after a failed takeover of a nearby dungeon and she was left without the financial resources to complete her deathtrap construction. It seems that most of her valuables had been liquidated when she created that one bridge of darkness with the 95,000 death spells that occur every two nanometers. Obviously she was not a creature of subtlety. Trollbark villain Mela... You're next!!
