Khalid is the only 'pure' fighter NPC. He is the only NPC that can make mor than ** in long swords.
On the other hand: Minsc will do VERY well also. Both are obtainable early in the game. Minsc is coupled to Dynaheir (they are a couple ), so if you do not want to have Dynaheir in your party, you have to either let here die in an 'accident' or dump here inside a building, where you are not planning to return to. Ajantis, the paladin is also good, but I have never used him. Kivan and Coran can first be taken later in the game. They are better archers than tanks though. Kivajn makes a decent tank because his strength is something like 18/25. So I would often outfit him with the best bow along with good armor and melee weapons, i.e., I used him as both archer and a tank.

The one you forgot, Nerull, is Yeslick. Dwarven LG Fighter/Cleric, available near the end of Chapter 4. Like all Multiclassed Fighters (well, except Coran), can put ++ in any weapon, provided it's either Blunt, Spiked, or Missile.
Why do you say Khalid will leave the party if you hit 20 Rep? He's Neutral Good, not True Neutral. Sure, he'll leave if Jaheira does, but she won't leave at 20 Rep either. Oh, and Jaheira is not restricted to "natural" armors. Pure Druids do indeed have to wear leather, but Fighter/Druids can wear all the metal they want to.

Oh - I forgot the evil fighters Kagain and Shar-Teel. I have never used those, because (as the power player I am) I always play good/neutral parties.
I have never heard about Khalid leaving when you get a reputation of 20. But then again if you have high CHA (18+) no one will leave your party because of a too high reputation. Insane

Funnily enough, I've just played a whirlwind game of BG in a week with a Bard, and my party progression ran thus...
1) recruit Imoen. 2) recruit Xan and Montaron. 3) use Xan and Montaron as human shields to survive the next bit. 4) journey to and recruit Ajantis. 5) journey to and recruit Kivan. 6) journey to and recruit Branwen. 7) recruit Minsc and do his quest bit, then drop him and Dynaheir. 8) when possible, recruit Xan. 9) much much later, swop Imoen for Coran. 10) swop Branwen for Yeslick. An intersting note about Kivan is that he's proficient in spears and halberds - he works very well either as a marksman or, as I have found, as a second-line fighter, fighting over Ajantis' head with a spear. Often, he won't be attacked, especially if he moves in stealthy-like. Kivan and Coran, with bows, magical arrows and stealth, make an incredible team. I had the pair of them at level 5 take on and kill 2 Ogre Beserkers, 3 Ogres, 6 Half-Ogres and 4 Ogrillons with archer-fire alone. Both are really wasted if used as tanks. One major downside of Coran is that he has the trap detection abilities of a blinded kobold, just when you are in dire need of them. Take a few potions of power or whatever along if you want to use him. Later, he'll level up and improve (he'd better...)
