Who is that other Red Wiz who knows Edwin??

When I was exploring the different map areas around the extreme southeast, I came across a Wizard located at the center of a map who was standing on some ancient temple-like ruins. He at first made some sort of threatning comment (voiced), then when the dialog box came up he didn't seem to be hostile anymore, as it seemed he knew Edwin (who is in my party). It has been awhile since this encounter so I can't remember exactly what he said. I think he told Edwin that he was surprised at how quickly Edwin had disposed of the Witch (Dynaheir). Then soon after he said his two-bits, the Wizard up and left.

What I am curious to know is, would this Mage/Wiz have attacked my party had Edwin not been a member of it?
And if not, what other purpose does this Mage have??

(Edit) Actually I think I remember seeing this guy near Larswood and not the southeast. But then again my mind's a little fuzzy right now.

Actually they (red wizard + 3 apprentices(?)) are in the area with the spiders - north of the area with basilísks

Yes - they will attack if Edwin isn't in the party

I seriously only remember seeing one mage and not any others. And I'm pretty sure that I cleared out the entire map of where this mage was.

But why would they attack my party if Edwin was not with? I mean what purpose would that serve?

Ar-Cunin's right--there are 4 Red Wizards, but maybe if you enter the map area with Edwin, only the leader appears. I don't know, I never use Edwin. That area's tricky, what with all the Traps.

What purpose would their attacking you serve? It adds atmosphere (You were rude enough to interrupt their experiments, and Red Wizards are not known for their forgiving nature), you get EXP for killing them, and you can loot a decent Ring from their leader (plus assorted Robes and spell scrolls).

Please tell me that you are not referring to ANOTHER SPELL ENHANCING ring??!!
The reason I am shouting is because I have 3 mages in my party and the way that you make it sound... I just past up another RING OF WIZADRY!!! AAAAAAHHHHHHHH!!!! Why me?!?!?! *Smashes head on desk.*

Don't worry, it wasn't a Ring of Wizardry.

It can be worn by any character, and it's basically a Wand of Aganazzar's Scorcher that you can wear on your finger, so it's kinda handy if you're fighting something with a really good AC. Not a really great Ring, but decent.

I have Edwin in my party and have come across these red wizards before, believe me there are four. Being the beardy ■■■■ that i am i attack the three apprentices making sure that the shroud is just about covering their leader. If it isnt he just talks to you and than the 4 of them just vanish. The reason why i do this is i make a hefty profit from the wizard robes they drop. As for the leader, it is literally imposible to kill him if Edwins in the party as he vanishes instintaniously.
If your looking to boost your wizards performances with magic items just take a trip to the mage of high hedge directly west of Beregost. He has some kick ass stuff but remeber to bring your wallet as some of the stuff is more costly than all of the plastic surgeries and face lifts Cher has undergone in her career added together. The selection includes robes that boost magic resistance and give a 5 armour class to the wizard without intefering with his spell summouning abilities costing around 26000Gold pieces!!!!!!!

I have three mages within my party of six. They are; Edwin, Xzar, and Xan. Edwin has the Robe of Evil ArchMagi, Xan has the Neutral one, and Xzar has the guantlets of dexterity. Edwin has his special necklace (of course), Xzar has the Ring of Wizadry, and Xan has no spell enhancing items.

Now the only places that I have yet (in this campaign) to exlore is; Durlag's Tower, Baldur's Gate, Ulgoth's Beard, the ?Werewolf Island?, and under Candlekeep. I have scoured every other area out there... atleast I'm farely sure that I have. Now the question that I'm seeking an answer to is, what other "spell enhancing" equipment is there to be found, that I do not have? Such as, a second Ring of Wizadry, a "Necklaceofspellenhancingsomethingoranother", a cloak, or any other similar item that increases the amount of spells a mage can cast.

There is indeed another Ring of Wizardry out there--you've already read the spoiler that tells you exactly where to find the cheesily-obtained one. There is also an Amulet that grants Mages 1 more 2nd-level spell. And don't forget all the Wands and things out there--they can be considered "spell-enhancing items" because they free up spell slots that the Mage can then use for something else.
