No your current stuff will not look crap at all. It will look the same as if you are showing it on a 780 screen.

I dont think that getting a 1080p will make your look dvd crap rather your just not fully utilizing your lcd until you play HD Or blueray disc.

my cousin just bought himself 40inch as well. looks sweet as even though its dvd while it can go up to FULL HD 1080

You can upscale standard DVDs on many players these days to look pretty close to high-def without the expense of a new HD player.
