I've got a 2005 Corolla. This is the second Corolla that I've owned. They have a history of great gas mileage and dependability. The first one that I owned lasted for 130,000 miles. It would have lasted longer if it hadn't been badly vandalized.

Antryg, how roomy is the Corolla? My husband, as you know, is a tall guy and with me being short...it makes it fun trying to find a car we can both be comfortable driving!

My parents had a Toyota Carina for more than ten years. They bought the car when it was three years old in 1993, and just sold it this January. It was a great car and during the time we had it it did not cause any big problems. It was even fun to drive. Now my mother's buying a Honda, but I'm not sure what type.

BMW and Mercades... definitely reliabe (but even basic maintenance is expensive).

Audi... LOL! Reliable income for your mechanic is what you'll get with them.

We've got two Subaru's, my wife drives a Legacy Outback and I drive a Legacy GT Limited in the winter and a Z28 for summer fun. My wife's car has been fairly reliable (and the car is almost 7 years old now), the only significant repair has been head gaskets (common problem on Soob's). My GT needed head gaskets and transmission both before 60,000 miles, so while I LOVE the car, I've been less than happy with it's reliability. We used to have a Suburban, a very reliable truck but expensive to keep in gas.

For winter driving (and it looks like you live in NY) it's hard to beat AWD... I won't ever be without it again. Subaru reliability isn't great but it's not horrible either. I don't recommend trucks or suv's for winter driving, they're easily the most common vehicles I see off the road in the winter (of course some of that could be suv driver's invincibility complex).

The corolla is a small car, I feel cramped in it @5-11 so I can imagine Nacht will be stuffed in it, knees on the wheel so to speak. Although we have had the car for 5 years and so far so good. great gas milage etc.. Now my Cougar on the other hand is a gas hog, big block engines and a lead foot is a bad combo @ $2.00+ a gallon for gas now. My pick up is a nissan and it is dilapidated but ahs been a good vehicle, but if I were to recommend a brand, go Toyota, ahd a truck that had 400K+ in miles on it. Shop around, it is a buyers market, and go to the fleet manager at the big car lots, if they say they need to ask a manager for approval, walk away because they are there own manager's. Set your price and stay firm no matter how heart set you are on the car, if they dont meet your resonable price walk away and go elsewhere.

Thanks for the info RR, dplax, Thoran and Elif. Knowing the Corolla is cramped for you, Elif, I'm guessing Nacht is going to be feeling claustrophobic in one so we may have to try the Camry. He's 6'3 and in my Sentra the poor guy has his knees practically in the steering wheel even with the seat all the way back AND tilted.

They've redesigned the Corolla for '05 and it now has more room. I'm 6 foot tall and don't have any problem. I've got pretty long legs and I am not cramped at all. At least give it a try. If it is still too cramped or you can afford it right now, then try out the Camry. I loved it but couldn't afford it.

I feel the same about my Rav4, which is also good on fuel. The alternator died within 60 days of ownership, but it was covered by the warranty, and I even made them pay my towing fee (of $300). Other than that, no glitches except for the fact that it's been hard to get my wife to learn that any contact between you vehicle and other structures in the world = BadThing(tm).
