How could Japan as a whole think about being a conqueror again when the last time they tried it we dropped 2 nuclear bombs on them. I think they got the message.

It's too bad that had to happen, because the reprecussions of those two bombs have put the entire world in fear of the nukes. It was different when the "responsible" countries had them, now any rich fanatical group can buy them and they won't be so reticent to use then when they get angry at a country.

It had to happen? Says who? The Americans responsible?

It certainly did not have to happen IMO.

True. I believe Cairns has been conquered by the Japanese... (ooooohhhh)

Yes, at the time the bombs were dropped the people in charge felt it was the only way to end the war with Japan. It is too bad it had to happen, I would rather it never did. Of course that is past history and nothing can be done now. They (the USA) justified it by saying that a lot more lives would have been lost if the nukes weren't dropped. I don't agree, but that's just my opinion.

Well said Yorick. The bombs were only dropped as a display of force to the ever more powerful Soviet Russia. That is what world politics is about folks - whoever has the bigger weapon. Also I resent the attitude that the US, UK, and the other major western powers have towards other nucleur powers. We are like the drunk driver at the end of the party - won't let anyone else drive but then proclaim "I can handle it". The inference is that the rest of the world is not as developed politically as America, a very condesending image to give. And then we wonder why huge portions of the world hate us...

Well I never said I agreed with the bombing of Japan. Did it sound like "I" wrote that "I" thought it was necessary?

No troubles! Around here, it's usually a good thing to make sure you make clear where you stand, otherwise it can cause trouble. No anger meant toward anyone on this thread, certainly not you!

The problem at the moment with the whole of this "War on Terrorism" is that people don't seem to understand who created the current crisis. The West have, systematically over the years. Radio Havana put it quite well "The chickens have come home to roost. There is no smugness in saying it, only anxiety for what will follow."

Only as a display of force against the Soviets?

The US had been at war with Japan for nearly three years after their attack on Pearl Harbor. One week prior to the first atomic bomb being dropped there was a proposal for surrender sent to Japan, and it was rejected outright. Three days after the second bomb was dropped, the Japanese agreed to that proposal, only asking that they could keep their emperor. We agreed and the war with Japan was at an end.

The war was brought to an end without losing a single American soldier in an invasion of Japan. How many were saved? The estimates vary from hundreds of thousands to millions of American and Japanese. Obviously American casualties were completely negated, and I find it hard to believe American troops could have marched to Toyko without killing far more Japanese than were lost in the explosions. We didn't start the war, but we ended it on our own terms.

I don't doubt that shocking the Soviets was a nice, anticipated side-effect, but I'm also sure ending the war with Japan was much more important.
