Actually go to www.urbandictionary.com and check out their section on 1337speak, it explains how alot of it came about (all your base are belong to us, pwned, etc) as well as why it was used in the first place. Granted now it's turned into online ebonics ie a language for those too stupid to learn how to write correctly, or who want to impress someone by seeming "kewl".
