question: did the game install successfully before on same machine? Could it be the disc is scratched or otherwise damaged? Have you tried one of those CD repair kits?

Also: A Bioware forum search resulted in this. You might find something useful there.

Maybe try googling for it.

Oh! Thou art God!

BG2 is reinstalling as I type. I found a link to a Windows Installer update that was meant for Windows NT, but a guy said it worked on his XP system. A link to the page itself will be handy for anybody searching the Ironworks forums for this, and in a minute, I'll rename the thread itself if I can. I won't Email Interplay's customer support to tell them "never mind," I think I'll leave their clock running, for educational purposes.

I didn't even know BioWare had forums any more. Yay for the guys who actually do (or did) the work [and by this I mean BioWare] actually knowing how to fix things, or at least encouraging people to share their solutions, even though most do-it-yourself sites will direct to the workers' bosses [and by this I mean Interplay] instead.

ZFR, you rock.
Ironworks, you rock too.
Gamer-support-network, rock on!

And thanks to you as well, ElfBane. Yes, I got it--my registry turns out to be A-ok, but don't feel left out. Every little bit helps.
