I was planning out my FMT soloist, when I started to wonder why even bother with the mage class. It won't take me long to get UAI, which will let me use scrolls, wands, etc. And there is sooooo much gear that simulates spells. Also, with the faster leveling, I'll be able to get more weapon proficiencies.

Other than losing important mage things like breach and other protection stripping magic, what do I lose by ditching the mage class. Also, how does a FT get around these obstacles?

Thanks.

Well, most protection-oriented spells wear off after a few rounds or turns, so if you retreat when you see the mages cast their spell triggers and wait for them to wear off, that should do it. The only thing that won't wear off easily is Stoneskin; you just have to battle your way through it.

One other thing: put profs in bow (preferably short bow since there are much better shortbows than longbows in this game: Gesen Bow and Tansheron's Bow), and invest in a LOT of arrows of dispelling. This will do all the breaching, etc., that you will need. (Successful strike is tantamount to "Dispel Magic.") That's how solo archers do it.

I agree with above. There's nothing that a fighter/rogue can't really deal with. Like you said, once you get UAI you're set. There's wands in watchers keep that cast breach/pierce magic so that solves that problem. I think you'd be spreading yourself a bit thin with three classes too.

hmm, have you considered doing a Mage/Thief or a Fighter/Mage? those are very fun soloist guys.
and if you do a FT, remember to use Hide In Shadows ALOT and i recommend you to put proficencies into either Long Sword, Short Sword, Scimitar, Quarterstaff or Katana because you can backstab with them.

FMT's can use good mage stuff (Vecna, SoMagi) early, so can kick butt. Besides, the amount of spell-emulating items is limited, and most of the spells you would want to cast you can't until ToB, and by then you've hit the XP cap. FMTs have the advantage of being able to cast a neat spell, hit a few people, then cast another, and another, etc. Once they run out of spells, they just run around a corner and hide, then backstab for 150+ damage. (on critical hit) Nothing beats the FMT's overall versatility. I have yet to encounter a situation he couldn't handle... alone.

a FMT is good combo, but the bad thing is it takes FOREVER to lvl! plus, if you havent removed the EXP Cap then its not gonna be able to get at high as your FT. But, if you want the strongest character, and you have alot of time, and youve removed the exp cap, i would say a FMT lol. but if you HAVENT, a fighter/thief is a great combo

Xero279, with ToB, the 8M cap is plenty high for you to kick butt. My FMT took on the Twisted Rune at 1.5M total XP (500K each class) and had NO DIFFICULTIES!! he didn't take a single point of damage! not bad when the character is something like 11/12/13th level.
