swords & sheilds

I've just started the game and equiped two of my characters to specialise in large swords believing I could equip shields with this weapon type. Although the weapon description is one handed I am unable to equip shields. This is true of other one handed weapons ( mace, flail etc. )as well.Have I miss understood the weapon / shield system or has the game picked up a bug.?
Do characters aquire this skill at higher levels ?

Welcome to the forum, phoenix999.

Do you maybe have other weapons equipped in your quick-weapon-slots? It doesn't matter if the active weapon is one-handed, if you have a two-handed weapon in another slot, you can't equip a shield. This includes bows and crossbows, twohandswords, halberds, spears and quarterstaves. The other way around, if you have a shield equipped, you can't equip a two-handed weapon in any of your quick-weapon-slots.

Might i presume that you are also equiped with a two handed weapon (in your quick weapon slot) such as a bow, crossbow, 2-handed weapon?
I found the same thing to happen and it drove me nuts.
Maybe, the shield is some special one, and your char is restricted from using that particular shield.
