My friend is anorexic...

It's just terrible to see her sometimes, she is so skinny it's insane, she doesn't eat at all somedays and when she does she usually goes to the bathroom and throws it up. I talked to it about her tonight and she said she always feels fat and feels guilty about eating. She knows it isn't true but she can't help it.

I feel so sorry for her, and was wondering if you guys could give me any advice on how (and if) I can help her somehow.

I just have too try...

It's quite a dangerous conditition, actually. People have been known to die from it. Perhaps you can convince her to see a doctor?

I don't know Jorath, it's hard knowing what to do in a situation like this. I would try to persuade her to see a doctor definitely.

Yes she needs to see both a doctor for physical needs, but also a doctor for mental needs. She most likely has very low self asteem and is trying to maintain the "perfect body" and views every single little ripple on her body as her being fat. I also think, from what I've read, that the throwing up deal can be addictive, as they get good at it and can eventually puke pretty much on call, and just get to doing it after they eat frequently. I can't imagine what it is like, or what I could do to help someone in that situation, other than to try to boost their self asteem, and tell them they are NOT fat, and that weight does not matter anyway, and again, direct them to a mental health therapist/psychiatrist/doctor.

Very sad Jorath, I hope that she gets help.

aside from the previous posters advice- if you're a praying person- pray.

i wish you, and her, much luck. any eating disorder is a major problem, i'm glad you want to help her.

Does her family know? Maybe they can help convince her to talk to a dr. about it.

True, up to a point, but it does matter if you are obese as it can have serious health consequences. And even if not, it's still not good to be out of breath all the time and put extra strain on joints etc.

Well, uncle Vaskey, I doubt an anorexic will become obese! [img]tongue.gif[/img] But if that were to happen, wouldn't it be weird? Anyways, I suggest the doctor methods, as well.

Get her talking about it, don't nag or fuss, try and stay off the topic of weight if you can help it but talk to her.

Try and avoid telling her your worried about her in so many words as this could drive her into isolation about the issue..

Be open and supportive, offering to go with her to see the doctor can also be helpfull as a show of support..

Getting out of the habbit is hard, feels like you've eaten so much it hurts, it's easyer to start with keeping light meals down, little and often.
