Exclamation

I don't get it. I tried to soul trap a high level dremora (or was it a xivilai?), had Azura's Star in my inventory, and I got a message saying I don't have a big enough soulstone for this soul. No soul captured. What gives?

Perhaps your skill isn't high enough to trap a soul like that ? If i recall correctly there are several soultrap spells for sale, including one called "legendary soultrap". Which one did you use ?

Trapping a soul does not depend on a skill. The only things that matter are: (1) Was the Soultrap spell active when the victim died? and (2) Do you have a sufficient soul gem?

The message hints that the Soultrap has succeeded. I see only one possible reason of failure: the Azura's star was not epmpty when the dremora died. This can happen easily if the Soultrap has the area effect. You cast the spell on your victim, the spell succeeds - but more monters are trapped. Now, a "wrong" monster gets killed first and the star gets it. And so on.

Did some quick testing. I can capture storm atronachts, which have great souls. I need to test some more with createres with grand souls. I've also read you can not capture humanoid souls unless you have a black soul gem, but surely dremora don't count as humanoid...

Black soul gems? Sounds like there's fun to be had playing a nasty pasty sorceror! That's something i missed being able to do in Morrowind.

Hmm... I can capture grand level ogre souls just fine, but when I went to Oblivion and tried take the soul of a dremora valkynaz, I didn't succeed. Azura's Star was empty. Either dremoras count as humanoids or it is some other bug.

Dremoras probably count as humanoids, then.

Kyrvias is on the right track. The Dremora are NPC's not creatures and therefor require a black soul gem in order to capture their souls.

I would bring up the argument that "Dremora could be captured in Morrowind" then shoot it down with the whole "But there were no black soul gems in morrowind, thus proving your point moot" theory, but I think I already explained that to all of you
