I was wondering if you guys can give me any advice as I am seriously stuck on the road to Arnika. I searched the board a couple of days ago and people had pointed out that this can be one of the hardest bits, but I'm afraid even taking this into account and using everything at my disposal I still can't get through. The problem is a group on 9 Higardi highwaymen...if I could get all my spells off without failures I would probably be okay, but unfortunately that never happens and eventually they end up slaughtering my party (fighter, samuri, priest, rogue, wizard and psionic). I think I must have taken them on at least 20 time now. I just wondered if anyone could offer me any advice on beating these guys as the frustration is putting me off what looks like a great game!

Thanks in advance for any advice

Make sure to use all your 'weaponary', such things as silly faerie powders can save your life sometimes. If you have Psionic, INSANITY should do the trick.

If it still looks hopeless, set your game to EASY, and try again

If it's too hard, it's not a bad idea to go back to the monastery, have a few random encounters to boost your levels, and then go back to the road as a stronger party.

I had many problems in this area too when i 1st started. Is it when you turn the corner and there are the highway men near the house / in the path? If you can try to squeeze yourself into a corner and fight one at a time, a good place is the corner near the house if you can get to that. Also, try to paralyze or stun them in anyways you can.

Are you casting the highest power level of your spells or the lowest / medium? If you cast the highest you will fizzle alot and end up backfiring quite a bit. If you still have problems, go back and level some, you shouldn't need to but if you have to do so. This game is WORTH it.

The other solution is to NOT be a high level party when you're on the road to Arnika...

Remember, just because you can go up a level doesn't mean you should. In Wizardry 8, the monsters' difficulty is based on your level, so if you stay at level 1 when you leave the monastery, the monsters will be TONS easier. Once you're in arnika, you can level up and get all of the equipment you need to become a badass party.

As for spells backfiring, make sure you're only casting power levels that are in the green. If you don't have any in the green yet, I guess you'll have to practice. If you have a Bard with you to put everyone to sleep, you'll have an easy time with things.

Excellent, thanks guys. I have tried a few of those things (backing the party into a corner and using powders e.t.c) but I was unaware of the thing with the spells being in the green (a case of RTFM??). I will have a crack at it again then try reducing the difficulty if I still can't beat 'em. I had figured that the encounters might be level dependent, but I might try leveling up with some random encounters before I resort to changing the difficulty.

I gotta say that as someone who has only played the infinity engine games before I have found this to be a real breath of fresh air, so I don't want to quit now!!

Thanks again.
