Just to throw out one of my recent favorites, I'd recommend the Song of Fire and Ice series. If you like Jordan or Tolkien you'll love this stuff. Fast paced and actioned packed. More stuff happens in the first book than the last four Jordan books combined!!!!! Hope everyone enjoys them!

And it's a lot less predictable than Jordan too. However, keep in mind that the subject matter is more mature. It's war and life in a middle ages like setting. So it is more gritty than the likes of Jordan, a bit closer to dark fantasy.

I'll admit that the last four books for RJ has slowed down (I'll assume you're talking about WoT series?) but it had to tie up a LOT of loose ends before moving the plot to it's conclusion ... the Chosen One and the Dark Lord Winning the battle ...
