For me it depends on the alingment of my party. If there was no such thing as alingnment it would be Edwin just because he is the better mage.

Edwin is Lawful Evil. People prefer Edwin because the Conjurer kit is better than the Necromancer, Edwin's amulet is pretty nifty, and Edwin has 16 CON, ensureing good hitpoints. The downsides to Edwin are that his DEX is mediocre, which hurts his AC, and his WIS isn't good either. Xzar beats Edwin handily in both of these categories.

Myself I am a Xzar fan all of the way...Sure he is a sickly little runt with a low constitution but if you keep him protected and keep an eye on your rep(which you will have to do with edwin as well) he is a mage worthy of a spot in almost any party. And who can say that Edwins dialogue can beat Xzar's lines?
